View Full Version : 2005 Rally in Vegas?

Since the rally site for 2005 has fallen through, the committee has begun to look at some alternatives. Rumor has it that the MOA Rally Site Committee has been in negotiations with the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. This investigation began with the ride to Vegas for the opening of the Guggenheim exhibit there a few years ago. Although there has been some disgruntlement from the older members of the MOA regarding the Charleston location(a city location), the bottom line is that it was one of the most popular and possibly the most profitable rally in MOA history. According to a member of the rally committee, that prefers to remain nameless, the current plan is apparently to have a “hotel” type rally every two or three years.
The negotiating with the Flamingo is along these lines. The MOA will have first dibs on the thousand plus rooms at special rally weekend price. The campers will occupy the top three floors of the parking garage directly next to the hotel. In other words, no split rally site! By using the garage those that want sun can have sun and those that want shade can have shade. Parking next your bike will be simple, so that the complaint regarding the Charleston rally will be alleviated. The security issue is easily taken care due to the nature of the parking garage. Only four security people per shift and they can easily handle the flow. The bottom two floors will be motorcycle rally parking for bikes. Those that wish to tour the bikes in attendance will be able to have one stop shopping. The ground level of the garage, will be where the beer tent will be located and no tent is needed, so we won’t have to worry about it blowing down. Again, access will be restricted to rally participants only.
Since it will be Vegas in the summer, those that complained about the rain in Charleston will have little to worry about. Even if does rain, most everything is undercover, so except for those nature lovers on the top floor of the parking, no one should get wet. For those that are worried about the possibility of heat in Vegas during the summertime...not too worry. The Flamingo will be supplying Cool Zone fans. These blow cooled air across a large area, so there should be no complaints about the heat. With the parking garage location, there won’t be any benefit to arriving early to find shade, it will be available to all! Early arrivals will be welcomed with open arms, though they will have to camp outside the city, since the parking garage will not be available. Space is being made available on the government land outside of Vegas for those that do not want to stay in the city or are early arrivals.
The entertainment committee will be able to tap into a large pool of Las Vegas talent. At this time the names of Rich Little, Marti Rossi (if he is still alive at the time) and some big name magician are in the mix. For music, Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdink have expressed interest. It is not true that Frank Sinatra will be raised from the dead, though there is some possibility that one night will be filled with Elvis impersonators.
The vendors will be happy with the large well equipped ballroom at the Flamingo. With the plethora of buffets at the many hotels, food will take care of itself. Apparently the biggest problem facing the rally organizers are what to do with all the elder members who arrive in their RV’s. My source inside the committee has been extolling the virtues of a large Walmart about six miles from the Flamingo. There is already a regular bus that runs between the Walmart and the Flamingo. Rally goers will be able to ride any bus in Vegas for fifty cents.
For those that like to gamble, the Flamingo is providing a coupon for matching funds up to thirty five dollars. In other words, with your thirty five dollar registrations fee you get a coupon for thirty five dollars in matching money for the Flamingo casino. That means your rally is really free. With good luck you can profit from attending. The Flamingo is also considering refunding the MOA five dollars for each hotel room rented, if they book at least 500 rooms. Registration will be done on line, for those that show up on site without being pre-registered, they will be able to register in a hangar at McCarren airport where a bank of computers are being set up. It will be totally electronic and the MOA will only have to provide two greeters. Everything else gets punched out once you register. This includes your door prize coupons which will be put into a database, which will be accessed electronically at one of the theaters in the Flamingo where the awards ceremony will be held.(Yes of course it is air conditioned) The rally master of ceremonies pushes a button and your name appears on the big screen. All you need to do in order to win is have the barcode from your rally bracelet scanned at the theater. This same scanning technology will allow you to pick up your pin and patch at the country store. The pre-awards ceremony entertainment is alleged to be Siegfried and Roy, both of whom are motorcycle enthusiasts. The later will have his Vincent Black Shadow on display in the lobby of the Flamingo. There is no credibility to the rumor that this will be the surprise third motorcycle to awarded at the Awards Ceremony. The big question of do you need to be present to win or not, will be decided by the to be determined rally chairman. (The MOA has been trying to convince Michael Friedle to do it for a third time). The rally has been tentatively assigned the name the Venture in Vegas.
The riding in the area around Red Rocks is supposedly fantastic and the GS ride will occur on government land with thousands of square miles of open space. You will have to sign a waiver alleviating both the government and he MOA from any responsibility should you have an unfortunate experience. The experienced rider course will occur in the parking lot of one of the major malls just outside the city. Camp Vegas, for the younger riders, will also include a special session on blackjack, roulette and craps. My informant tells me that the Yankee Beemers are intending on setting up a series of nickel/dime poker tables to train the youth of the MOA on how to best spend their money.
It is anticipated that this will be the biggest rally ever and most importantly the most profitable. With the needs and wants of everyone taken care of, the MOA expects that no one will complain, though there are always a few that are never satisfied.

I volunteer to be the Astro-Turf chairwoman.
We need to install Astro-Turf in the garage to ensure the camping is comfortable, as well as plentiful.
We will use decking material under the Astroturf in the areas of the garage where there is a slight incline. All spaces must be flat. :p
I love Vegas! And, I don't even gamble.

Now I understand why our MOA Ambassador from South Africa was asking so many questions and feverishly taking notes during the entire "Almost Heaven" Rally.
Sounds like a good plan to me....but what the hell do I know about a "city rally"??? :eek

Hey Mark.the great White North is generally considered to be Ontario,Manitoba and Alberta.BC does not qualify as it is considered to be an alternative Lotus Land with insufficient(but with some.especially around Hope) rednecks.
Now Manitoba....next international rally site....hmmmmmmmmm........The Forks....casinos....60 miles north of the US border....Winnipeg....Birds Hill...Grand Beach...The Morris Stampede...cheap and friendly...(blush,confessing self interest) place I grew up.

They take off their parkas and toques and wear next to nothing for the rest of the 4 weeks of summer, neatly coinciding with the rally dates.

OK, Kabasa has all the in town lodging and attractions covered for the 05 "Vegas Gamble Rally".
I am hard at work on setting up the camping areas. Currently in negotiations with:
Lake Mead for quiet camping area. Not much shade, but miles of shoreline for swimming, just stay away from the lip of the dam.
Tahoe for hill top camping. Not much oxygen, but great views when you finally get to your tent site. Chair lifts will be available for the non GS riders.
The Bunny Ranch for the party camping. Not much rest time, but you'll die happy.
All sites will be connected by shuttle helicopter. Maybe two helicopters if we can find enough union pilots willing to work overtime.
Come to Vegas in 05. We're betting you'll have a great time.

Actually the Las Vegas Motor Speedway will be the site of the camping, conviniently located across the street from Nellis Air Force Base.
The Beer tent will be sponsored by Busch, and the smoking area by Winston. Track time will be limited to daylight hours.
Camping is in the infield. For those who want to hotel it, The Orleans will be running a shuttle
Ya know the more I think about it, the more a racetrack makes sense to hold the rally.

The LVMS would be nice, but if you really want to go fast, Nellis is the place to be.
Just don't sign any "release waivers" during any high speed runs. Oh yeah, and plan on expanding your weekend Rally experience to at least six years.:p

Dog GONE Kbasa quit having all the answers.I thought"but it's a DRY heat"was a perfect thing, then you went and pulled up this Heat thesis.
Now in Winterpeg,it could even be Winter even in summer;and there is the heat moderating influence of thr Forks, where the Red and the Assiniboine meet.
OK it will be hot in summer. Some of us like it that way.As long as there is shade. We found such a great campsite in Trenton, near the beer tent but in the shade.

I really don't recommend having the MOA rally in Las Vegas in July----July is the extremely "toasty" period and you would find camping in a parking garage unbearable. The hotel parking garages are nor air conditioned. Riding in July in and around Las Vegas is not fun even at midnight. No---I think a rally in LV at that time would not fgo ver well at all!!!!!
Bill48861
08-26-2003, 04:36 PM
Sorry about the spelling mistakes----shoud read parking garages are not air conditioned. You would find "camping in them unbearable. Having a rally at that time would not go over well at all!!!!!! In short----Don't Even Think About It.!!!!!

As another Las Vegas Resident, I have to agree with Bill, but by all means come. At least I won't have to worry about getting time off to finally make a national. I don't know about these "cool zone" fans, but the hottest place in Las Vegas at 2:00 AM is a parking garage. The cement holds the heat all night. Get a room.
This time of year is refered to as "monsoon season" The only time it's less than 100˚ is when there are flash flood warings, and 110˚+ is not uncommon.
But it IS a dry heat.
What a shame it couldn't be April, it's absolutely gorgeous in the spring.

Hi Lorazepam October in Winnipeg was usually great,a reprieve from winter called Indian summer. Cold clear frosty starry nights, warm exuberant exciting, last summer days before winter.Usually the snow held off till November.Sometimes it snowed in October, but don't forget,it is still harvest time in manitoba in October, hence, the harvest moon.October let you know that December, and therefore winter, were on the doorstep;but not just yet,
I have experienced snow in June but only as the last feeble gasp of winter,
I assure you,the beautiful women of Winnipeg will be near NAKED from gratitude for summer,in mid-July.

Let me qualify my input on this one. I've never been to a rally, so I can't comment on past events. However, Vegas in July doesn't sound like a great idea. I've been there, it's really hot. I didn't think you went to rallys to sit inside air-conditioned hotels.
I have also been to Winnipeg several times. It's a very interesting, multi-cultural city with lots of stuff to see and do. Yup, the land is pretty flat, so any planned rides would probably lack the ups and downs, ins and outs that Beemerphiles so love, but you'd have a lot nicer weather, in my opinion.
Plus, I'm from MN, so it would be a nice ride for me.

Just so you know the real site will be just fine. Actually it is fantastic.
It is not in a parking garage in Vegas, however the board and the Rally and Events committee got a real kick out of this thread.
Best,

I cannot think of a better place to have a ralley. As I lived there for almost 25 years I will be glad to lead day tours around Vegas, I doube there is a road within 500 miles of the city that I have not been on.

You aren't getting all practical on us now that you're running for president are you? ;) Also a nice thing about Vegas will be all that free beer you can drink, as long as you can last at the gambling tables!

I really don't think it's appropriate for me to discuss this here, but if you look in your copy of ON you'll see.
