I am looking to buy a top box with a passenger backrest for my R1200RT. In general I do not like the looks of a top box . Wife needs a backrest and I am having a hard time finding a good looking passenger backrest and need some storage for those trips. I haved looked at the BMW large top box ...too big . The BMW small looks a little small but may work . Givi V46 looks a little round for the 12RT and when off that top plate does not look good . Maybe you guys can help me out . Let me know what you are using, your likes / dislikes and some pictures .
Thanks, Mike :dunno

I also thought the BMW large box was too big, but my dealer talked me into it. No regrets! It provides a real comfort zone for my wife, and gives you enough storage for the longer trips. Fits two full face helmets easily. Remember it only looks big when its on the bike, and its usually only on the bike when your wife is, which in my case is limited.

Basic black from JC Whitney. I have this one and I really like it. Topcase (http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Search?catalogId=10101&storeId=10101&sku=caa013068&searchbtn.x=8&searchbtn.y=9)

I use the Givi on my GS12. Good solid mount. Easy on and off. A variety of sizes available. I got the biggest one and use it mostly as a storage locker to hold riding gear and valuables when we are away from the bike. Only light stuff when we are riding. Wife loves the backrest.

I would also vote for the Givi. I am saving pennies for one, cause non of my BMW cases will hold my helmet. The Givi I looked at will :heart

My vote would also be the large Givi. Mine was very affordable. It is large inside, holds helmets and can be operated very easily with one hand. It also is very easy to pop on or off the bike. It does not act as a sail behind me on the highway.
When I first installed it on my K100 I really did not like the its look with the rest of the bike. That impression lasted less than one hour. Now, the rounded Givi just seems to flow with the other lines of the bike (at least in my eyes). As well, every so often if I have a larger box to transport, it usually fits in the Givi.

Aren't aftermarket backrests available for your bike?

I have both BMW's large top box and small one. The small one I use around town; the large one for trips because it carries a lot more. The latter comes with a back rest, but my wife doesn't use it.
Didn't like the silver color on the lid of the large one, however. So I painted it:

I like the looks of the BMW small case best, however I bought the large one to have the extra space. I wanted it keyed to the bike. I'm having it painted to match the bike should be done tomorrow.
