I thank so much those that responded to my last post,
'Basic Dumb Question', and suggest a review of that for background.

I got clever, and poured a little gas onto the neck of my tank, waiting to see which vent line it came out of. On the motorcycle side, I blew into each vent hose until I found the one that vented to the ground alongside its other venting buddies.

Blowing into the cannister verified that it was not plugged in any way. I marked them and they won't be mixed up again.

This much is solved.

Replaced Rhinewest chip with stock EPROM, put fuse five back in and hooked up the negative on the battery. Tank on, hoses attached, key on, kill switch to 'run' ...

The fuel pump stays on without timing out and no fuel is getting into the cylinders when starter is fired up.

Based on previous post, this suggests that Motronics Unit and/or EPROM chip is faulty.

Next step will be to put Rhinewest Chip back and reassemble, shutting down the new R259 by putting (I think) cruise pod to 11:30, clear Motronics memory with fuse five and negative on battery (redundant but effective) and see if it will run again.

Will report in 'Basic Dumb Question III'.

If so, then EPROM chip is bad. Can you buy just an EPROM chip or do you have to replace the whole Motronic unit? What do they run?

Many thanks to Kbasa, Montana, PGlaves, AntonLarfiader and Bubba Zanetti for their interest and input.

The chip is not available separately. You might find a used Motronics unit at http://www.beemerboneyard.com You dont list your year/model but they have a few available. $200 is the used price since they never go bad. :)

Good luck.

I can't find a reference to verify the comment (in the previous thread) that the fuel pump "times" but I found specs that verify the fuel injection system is pressurized, so I still suspect an atmospheric vent isn't allowing the pump to pressurize the system at startup.

But, hey, when it comes to advice, I suppose you get what you pay for...

I am wondering if maybe you have a bad fuel line in the tank with the pump.

What he said and maybe the fuelfilter is plugged up??? Or a kink in the fuelline somewhere?? :dunno

That plus, are you disconnecting the battery when you swap chips? If not try to cut the juice to the system for a minute.

From your first 'Basic Dumb Question' you said "...I can hear gurgling like the gas isn't getting up to pressure"... gurgling sounds from the fuel tank is not normal.

Have you verified the pressure in the fuel manifold? If you're hearing gurgling from inside the tank it sounds (no pun intended) like you may have a ruptured fuel line and/or it has become disconnected from the pressure side of the fuel pump.

If this is the case the fuel pump will pump fuel back into the tank instead of the fuel manifold. This could be what you hear gurgling. I would absolutely verify the fuel pump/lines/pressure before trying to run down anymore electrical gremlins. The fuel pump and lines are much cheaper and easier to verify.
