Last night I looked on my TiVo for some new shows to watch.
I looked under: 'Interests'-->'Motorcycles'.

The Results:
American Chopper, V-Twin Motorcycle TV, American Thunder, Steel Dreams, The Great American Motorcycle, Biker Build-Off, 2 Wheel Tuesday, The Motocross Files.

You will get almost the same results if you search under: 'Interests'-->'Posing'.

I am sick of all these 'roid raged chopper shows. They need to come up with some new motorcyclist-sport-touring-rally type show that does a ride report, a gear report and some maintenance tips. Is there a market for this type of audience??

"Life in the Fast Lane with Steve Natt" on the Fine Living channel covers a little bit of BMW motorcycling but I need more than a 10 minute segment every other show.

I'd probably watch it... but I'd rather be on a bike riding it. Soooo... if you need someone to look good in front of a camera and tell people 'what an awesome ride that was'... hehe, I'm tired of being a systems admin :=)

Actually, kind of funny.. I've thought off and on about figuring out how to do some work with discovery or N.G. that involved riding to obscure, unknown places of stunning beauty, and... well, waiting for the perfect shot. And waiting around some more in case I missed it :=) One of my favorite shows on TV is "Sunrise Earth" on INHD. Lucky....

What gets annoying too is the 'deadline' stuff every episode. :hungover
I think that 'two-wheel Tuesday' was on the right track but the commercial interruptions became unbearable, and it got cut to an 18 minute show +12 minutes of commercials. :sick

How's this?
Ya see, ... what we'll do is grab some really intelligent women and men, outfit them in leathers and send them off around the world on a reality rage! YEAH!

... now we just have to find a cast that would be willing to do it.

GOD it should be sticky! Can we keep it quiet until we get the endorsements and all up and runnin'?
Promoter ... marketing ... T-SHIRTS!!!!

Who's in for a ride?!?

I really like the chopper shows.
Its fun stuff, you guys would would whine if they took a /7 and rebuilt it.
"did you see what he did, he used a SST bolt when it should have been cadium plated steel bolt , then he said I'm using dino oil instead of synthetics in the final drive"
OH HEAVENS

Orange County Chopper's
American dream if you ask me, a guy who was a nothing poor SOB and made it big and rich, I could only be so lucky while enjoying bikes.

BMW tried choppers. A good bit would be how THAT debacle came to arguable fruition ...

I don't know too much about it but Two Wheel Tuesday was cut in half and moved to a time slot behind American Thunder. I guess that says a lot about what people out there really want.

I was a fan of American Thunder until sometime last year they stopped producing shows for awhile and replayed the same "chopper reveal" that was supposed to be Michele Smith's personal ride. I finally got tired of waiting and found something else to do on Tuesday night, and in so doing, missed the "big event" alltogether. What happened when she finally got her bike? Did anyone see it?

It is sad but true that TV has always shot for the lowest common denominator. I agree that the motorcycle shows currently on the cable networks are dumb, the "deadlines" are a transparent producers' attempt to inject drama, as is all the "family feud" footage.
I love to tweak some of the local riders here by referring to Michele Smith as "the world's foremost authority on motorcycles". Have you seen "Texas Hardtails" ? Talk about dumb!
But...there used to be NO motorcycles on the networks, except for the long gone "Then Came Bronson", and that was less than brilliant too.
If anyone is interested enough to line up some sponsorship money, rent a camera and edit suite, hire a crew and cast and try to do better then I'm interested enough to want in!

We need a motorcycle touring show where a couple, or a couple couples, packs up and heads out for the weekend. Focus on roads, scenic vistas, fun stops and nice places to stay/camp. It doesn't have to be BMW specific. It could be any kind of bikes. I could envision different flavors of touring. Riding the mining roads of CO. Luxury touring on a New England tour. Bed and breakfasts on teh WA coast.

It doesn't have to be Iron Butt stuff either. It could be a nice 400 mile weekend. Heck, it could be a 200 mile weekend if you had the right stuff to stop and do/look at.

But I think a show like that would present motorcycling as being closer to the way we and, I assume, the vast majority of motorcyclists really experience it.

Motocycling for the rest of us, I guess.

i wonder what is more common amongst the general motorcycling public, touring or posing?? from what i can figure, its the later. never mind non-riders, most motorcyclist (bikers, weekend warriors, whatever) give me a bit of a crazy look when i say i'm doing more than 500 miles in a day, or that i'm riding to the west coast, or the mid west, or whatever. there's obviously a market for these chopper shows cause they represent what most people like "ooh shiny, ooh expensive, lets go 5 miles down the road and put it in front of the ice cream bar so everyone and their kids can tell me how cool this thing is." its all image with television, "style" and sex sell. what's gonna get a higher rating, "Follow Mr. Joe Schmo on his K bike around the desert" or "INSANE NUTSO BIKER BUILDOFF WE GAURANTEE LOTS OF STUPID CHROME AND GIRLS IN BIKINIS RUNNING AROUND THE SHOP"

unfortunately, the lowest, easiest, least thoughtful common denominator rules..........

I agree. Great concept and idea. Have part of the show be an onboard recording. Pick a great ride each week, with some destinations along the way. Would be a good contrast, or nice complement to the other two wheeled content. All it takes is someone to put together a pilot and pitch it to Speed, Outdoor, Discovery, TLC, A&E, Travel, or some other like-minded channel and see if it sticks. Hmmmmmm...

Belg
01-20-2006, 03:39 PM
Yeah, I'm sure there's a market... the whole "reasonable" idea of nice rides, easy days, and good places to stay seems... marketable. "Carolina Bed and Breakfasts by Motorcycle" for example... "Wind and Dined... sport riding the Napa Valley"

C'mon, make me get creative

There's obviously lots of content to fill a whole season and more. I'd host the show in a heartbeat, but I'm stuck in this dot com thing. By the way, how much do you sell a TV show to a network for??

Belg
01-20-2006, 04:04 PM
good question... didn't "team lwr" mention something about how much they sold their episodes for? Figure cut that in half because we aren't them...

But hey, dot com or not, if you can make enough money changing careers, walk :=)

After 10 years in the tech biz, I'm ready to pack it in bigtime. Sure, I'm one of the best, but.. same stuff day in day out... blech.

Don't listen to me, I'm still in "Wouldn't it be nice" mode

Tina and I are headed to Carmel next month. That might be fun. Just think of a show that was basically video ride reports. You might focus on some gadget that was used to make the trip and get underwriting for that episode. Cold weather? Gerbings. Doing some ADV travel? Garmin. That sort of thing. It would add a gear facet that riders like, without it being the focus like so much of motorcycle journalism is.

I believe what y'all are talking about is a show similar to the motorhome show that was on the Travel Channel for several years. Perhaps some remember that, I believe the motorhome builders sponsered a good bit of that show. The people in the show travelled to camp grounds all over the country and basically tested products along the way.

Go for it guys..................... :groovy

Actually, with ride cameras coming down, you could use em to hack together a nice composite video, etc etc etc and use it to pitch the concept to a real production company, yadda yadda...

I remember that show. There was a couple on there that did the show. I think Good Sam was one of the sponsors. It was on TNN, back when they were the prime car/auto outlet on TV.

RV Today. Still on OLN. That's exactly what it was. About half the show was the destination and things to see, and half was on maintenance, repair and gadgets. As a motorhomer I enjoyed it. They had (have) a gal who gave some great recipes for simple on-the-road cooking.

There are sponsers out there with big bucks, the documentry below features 3 BMW GSA's, for the riders and the camera man. I believe the support vehicle is Mitsbusi, Snap On Tools and clothing mfg's amoung lots of others are represented.

Long Way Round

A sort of The Motorcycle Diaries for the Hollywood set, this documentary miniseries chronicles the cross-continental adventures of actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman as they set out on their BMW bikes to travel round the world. Embarking from London and arriving 115 exhausting days later in New York, the duo tackles 20,000 miles of tough terrain, explores offbeat destinations and takes in colorful local culture.

I beleive this was made in 2004 for TV, if you havent seen it NetFlix has it on two disks

Thanks for the tip. Next time I'm in the library, I'll check out something by Lawrence Sanders.
I can't really take credit for the Beatles paraphrase, that came from a British spoof called "the Rutles". I think you can probably find it in the Rhino Records catalog.

Lets see..... riding, cameras, gadgets..... Sounds like a winner to me. Where are the aspiring producers on the board?? We have a ride reports forum now, just up the ante a little and start posting your "report" in video format. Seriously, everyone seems to want the look and feel of a scripted, edited, made for television segment, but amatuer video production is well within the capability of quite a few members on this board. I can forgive a lot of rough around the edges editing for stellar content any day. Just my $.02 on the topic. SO those of you with video cameras, lets see what you can do..... :lurk

Instead of (or in addition to) a group discount on V-1's, maybe a group discount on bike-mount video cameras would be beneficial to this idea?

As I suggested earlier, while it may not be 'pro' quality, it can sure as heck be used to market the concept to producers :)

Also, just a thought.. I know there's threads, but for a short summary, what are the top 3 quality bike-mount cams, in order of quality/capability, and their prices? The wolf wants to play...

Two Wheel Tuesday rarely has chopper content - although they do profile crusiser bikes once in a while. It's mostly sportbikes and dirt bikes (both sporting and racing) and they seem pretty well balanced in their content.

The Motocross Files are pretty cool too; especially if you grew up in the sport as so many have.

Dirt Rider Adventures was my favorite bike related show; dunno what happend to that series; they even had some dual-sport and adventure type content every once in a while

Would it be possible to conduct a production through the forum? Maybe appointing a committee, or incorporating voting of submissions by an elected group of capables? You know, over time compiling out own movie from our own video submissions. It seems likethat could actually be something we could do for just plain fun, and if it someday makes money, then we all get a complimentary snocone sans sneeze.

I either preview (rarely), or usually re-read my post after I post it... then edit for corrections. I know what words I most frequently mistype (from as form, the as teh, ign instead of ing, etc) and home in on those words. That being said, I got drilled on spelling and definitions pretty hard in AP english during high school (thank you, Mrs. Gibson!) and have a pretty extensive and versatile vocabulary....
