fellow wake-up-on-time enthusiasts,
i'm looking for a new clock radio. i want one that wakes me up gently, and adjusts for the depth of my sleep. for example, i want it to start out very quiet, and then get gradually louder. so if i am sleeping lightly that morning, it wakes me very quickly and i shut it off before waking my bedmate. on mornings when i'm dead tired/still drunk, i want it to blare at me.
what do you recommend?
i do not care about, but will accept:
- stereo
- CD playback
- "style."
the best thing i can think of is to just buy a cheap one that plays CDs, and then record my own CD that starts out with white noise at a low level, then gradually increases the sound level.
but i think you folks will have more options for me. :D

I'm sorry, no CD or stereo.

We just got one of these and love it. It's called the iHome. Stereo speakers that are ported out the back for rich base. Plays any size iPod including the Nano and charges the iPod as well. Plays AM or FM and the volume ramps up for the alarm. You can also hook up your CD player or external MP3 player. Has Frequency control so the radio station can't drift and a back up battery will insure the alarm will go off in the event of power failure. Clock sets itself for atomic clock accuracy and will automatically adjust for daylight savings. Has full proof alarm that will buzz if your iPod or device isn't connected properly. Snooze button and sleep timer. Available in white or Black. Ours from the Apple store came with this very cool mini remote control.

Unfortunately GE discontinued the model I have, but it does exactly what you are asking for. However now I am really digging that iHome :heart

When it comes to electronics, you definitely don't want to listen to Bradford.
First it starts out with the GE alarm clock and there's no end. I can't keep up with all this stuff he told me to get.
Hey Bradford. I did like you told me and explained to the wife that she won't even notice the center channel after awhile, but she's not buying it.

I am trying to remember the manufacturer, but the new Hampton Inn hotel clocks are awesome and do exactly what you are describing. a gradual crescendo to full pitch, all kinds of features too.

I use a Timex with Indiglow lighting. I got at a Drug store a few years ago and it has been working great. I usually wake up before it goes off, but the noise is irritating enough to get you going. :coffee

Try looking at one of the "Sharper Image", sound soothers. They come in a plethora of different models, including CD and maybe Ipod, got AM/FM and alarm, dual time zones, blah, blah, blah. I have been traveling for a living for 27 years, bought one a couple years ago to mask hotel sounds, now my wife has her own and my daughter is complaining she needs one. :blah :blah :blah :blah :blah :blah :blah :blah :blah

It is not my house, but that is a high end stereophile store from Japan if I remember right. That photo has been floating around the audio groups for a while

Wasn't that picture of the sound option for the new GS Adventure?

I saw some similar loudspeakers in a German disco back in '88. In fact, I think the white one peeking out in the far corner is the same model that the disco had. But this disco also had marble floors and an ice-cream counter and was well-lit and was owned by the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. I swear I ain't makin' this up!

This is what we have and love it! It does what you are asking, but it also has a weather radio in it. You can wake up to music, sounds or weather radio (which is key when you are trying to decide whether you are going to ride or at what time). It also has a weather alert feature that works extremely well. We live in tornado country, so that feature is invaluable. Plus, it is programmable to be set differently on Saturday and Sunday than during the week. :thumb

I second the I Home, Sams had a holiday special which included the remote and an alumium tuf skin housing for about $88.00. I bought one for my daughter and one for my office, after people saw and listened to my office unit they went and bought it. I probably sold about 10.
YMMV

Mine is a RCA RP 3720A. It has a battery back up and automatically resets itself if it comes unplugged. It has a digital AM/FM radio that gets fair reception (it gets good reception in almost every room in the house except my bedroom. Perhaps its too close to the metal pipes from the shower next door?) It has 2 alarms that are really easy to set. And the alarms gradually get louder as they go off. But my favorite feature is the Nap timer! Ahhhhhh, naps! :snore
I think I paid $20 for it at Target or best buy.
