Anyone here have experience with the Markel motorcycle insurance as advertised in BMWON? They seem to have good rates and some attractive benefits but I hesitate to switch from Progressive since I never really heard of them.
I have been insuring my motorcycles with Markel for 5 years. When I did comparison shopping, they were equal to Dairyland Insurance and Progressive.
PLUS -- they continue to support the Wisconsin Dells Rally, which is what got me interested in them in the first place.

My '03 K12RS was totaled in a accident caused by a rider covered by Markel. It took a week to contact an agent, and they were very slow to respond once contacted. They never once returned a call. When I learned the rider was underinsured, I turned the claim in on my Progressive policy, and had a check in hand within a week. The Markel adjustor contacted me a week after I had settled with Progressive.
I'd like to hear from someone who has filed a claim with them on their own policy. Low premiums are meaningless if there is no service behind the policy.

I just had some experience. Got a quote for all my bikes. Triumph was outrageous. K and F were OK, so I went with it thinking they would also insure my /5 and my Moto Guzzi. Had 'em appraised because they weren't in their books and needed it. The agreed to "insure" the /5 (appraised at $2500) for $2K, but somehow would only insure the museum quality Guzzi for $1200 (apparaise for over $6K). (Maybe they have a BMW bias?)
I insured the K and the F, for a couple of weeks. I found inusrance through Rider Magazine with GMAC for 2/3rds of what Markel wanted. So I've kept the policies on the /5 and the Guzzi, for now. As soon as I get a return phone call from GMAC, I'm adding those two as personal inclusions on my homeowners policy, for <$50/yr. (A trick the GMAC guy hipped me to)
So, I have to say: Thumbs Down

Why would they limit coverage on appraised bikes? My experience has been that the insurance company just sets the premium to cover the appraised
value. :dunno

Exactly what I asked them, with no plausable explanation. My next question was "then why did I bother getting the bikes appraised"? Likewise, no valid answer. Previously I had "aggreed value" policies with State Farm in UT. NV agents won't write such a policy and the "collector" insurance companies I've contacted are too restrictive on use for me. (in other words, I RIDE my bikes)

Greetings,
This tread is a big reason why I was very lukewarm on the program and voted against it.
Actually my biggest peeve was that we were introducing an affinity program that is not available to all members as Markel doesn't write insurance in MA.
Insurance is something that every one needs and should / will be tailored to their individual needs.
Markel has proven very nice for some and not so nice for others. This par for *every* insurance company.

And with such kind, courteous drivers in MA who would have thought insurance would be an issue. :wave

Would you insure a vehicle that had a high probability of being in Boston during the Big Dig? :stick :nyah

Why the MOA would support this group is the question? They were completely out of line in the price quotes for my 3 bikes. Rider Insurance on the other hand was very competitive on my K1200rs, and safeco won out on the K75 and F650. I do not recommend Markel.
