I have a 2002 k1200rs with 13k miles. the throttle cable snapped 5 inches from the handlebar. is this a design or product defect, bad luck or did the factory not put the cable in the groove right? also are there supposed to be two cables? i do not have cruise control.

BMW throttle cables tend to last a very long time. I think the design is likely just fine. If it were my bike I'd look for routing problems that would have kinked the cable and caused it to wear through the "teflon" liner. Fix that and the replacement cable should last a long time.
While at it, you might investigate any modifications to reduce the thottle resistance. Some folks find the throttle tension too high and I believe there is a retrofit kit to reduce that. My '03 if fine for me so I haven't gotten into it.
