Hello All: I recently heard that Sydney Nova Scotia will be hosting the first annual Cape Breton Festival of Speed TT races in late September of 2006. I have longed for a chance to go to the Isle of Man, but never can seem to afford it (time and money wise). So, I would consider myself to be an idiot for passing up the opportunity to head up to NS for the Cape Breton Festival of Speed and watch the TT Races. Has anyone ever riden in NS during late September? I hear Cape Breton is "crowded" in the summer months...is that true for September? Any suggested "must drive" roads in NS/Cape Breton? Thanks!
For more info on the TT RAces see: http://www.concordmotorcycle.com/news_article.asp?id=2359
A small group of enthusiastic TT race fans will be leaving upstate NY for the races in NS and are considering taking the Cat out of Bar Harbor. If you are interested in riding with us, let me know.

I spend the summer months in the Canadian Maritimes and hope to see the TT races. Suggest you check the folks at
BMW Owners of Nova Scotia (http://www.bmwons.ca/)
Traffic shouldn't be any concerns
Hope to see you there!

:dunno Before committing to The Cat you should note that from Bangor,Maine it is 480 miles to the race site when you take the boat. Plus you pay about $130 (plus tax, surcharge etc) each way. Both shores going up to and through Halifax are beautiful destinations in their own right but if the FoS is your immediate focus then you may want to save that for another visit. Now, from Bangor to the race site - taking the 'long way around'- is 567 miles. You haven't really saved any time and end up paying extra for the boat (although boat is a great trip in itself).
No matter how you get there, it will be an exceptional experience in one of the most beautiful parts of Canada- Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. See you there! :beer
In ’04 did a tour of the Maritime Provinces in July. There were many tourist but not like the stereo type Jersey shore on a weekend. It is much more open and laid back.
I took the Cat on the return trip due to weather cutting some time out of the trip. I can say I did it but it is not the memory of the trip. New Brunswick has some great roads. It would be a shame to miss them to save less than 90 miles of riding.
I spent sunrise to sunset one day going back and forth over the Cabot Trail. There were many bikes, repli-racers to big boat touring rigs, doing the same thing. This is a must do ride for anyone going to Cape Breton Island. The rest of the island is a wonderful mix of fun roads, great scenery and fun towns.
On the way back take the coastal roads down to Halifax. Fun! Once in Halifax figure out how you are going to make the run home.
Keep updating us on your plans. I may need to make another visit to one of my favorite areas.

The Cabot trail is spectacular! You won't be disappointed (unless it's cold, rainy, foggy ....all at once). While up there, venture to Meat Cove and camp on the edge of the earth. Finally, do the trail counter clockwise. :thumb

YES - it is an entirely different ride. Do it both ways it is worth the effort.

Meat Cove is very neat.
8 miles of heavy gravel road to get there!
Used a picture of myself sitting on my GS over looking the cove for this years Christmas card!
Go to Meat Cove!

Thanks! Great information. This trip is in the early stages of planning...but no better way to spend the winter months then planning summer trips! I did not realize the Cat was that costly... $260 can be better spent.

Bring a good rainsuit!
always have a good rainsuit. That time of year is not known for rain but if you are caught with the rain, fog and cool air it can be a bit unpleasant. Given that however, Nova Scotia has a much more temperate climate than you might think and, in Cape Breton especially, you'll be surrounded by some of the most wonderful folks in the world. Enjoy! :bar

That was sure our feeling when we were there in '04. Hated to leave, can't wait to get back!

Is there any thoughts about a BMWMOA specific meeting area? Will there be areas for camping with services?
I want to go, want to go!
Is N.S. following the Ontario lead about gasaholl, I read that Ontario is requiring a 10% alcohol/gasoline mix for fuel coming soon.

:type I did a quick inquiry regarding gasoline/alcohol blend. We have no indication that it is at all pending here in N.S. A tax chart at this site http://www.finance.gov.ab.ca/publications/tax_rebates/fuel/forms/AT2062_Q3.pdf shows where taxes are applied to various fuel types. Looks like N/A would suggest that the mix does not exist. :clap -Bob

Warning: The CMA has withdrawn sanction approval for the Cape Breton TT.
They say:
"Citing delays in necessary information being provided to the CMA as sanctioning body and to the insurer of the event, association General Manager Marilynn Bastedo expressed regret about the decision but stated that "such a major undertaking must be planned in a way that assures success at all levels, including and most importantly the security infrastructure. The deadlines for providing the information to us, and to the insurer, have not been met. There are now only a few months remaining and with the proposed race course snow covered for some of that time, the conclusion has been reached the the event is not viable at this time.""

It seems like the organizers are up against it, BUT:
They are still in frantic negotiations
I sent an email to the Economic Development folks in Cape Breton and received a prompt reply:
"Thank you very much for your note expressing your concerns around the
Cape Breton TT. The organizing body of the Cape Breton Festival of Speed is
currently negotiating and in a dialogue with the sanctioning bodies.
Please stay tuned to the Cape Breton Festival of Speed web site located at
www.cbfestivalofspeed.com for further information updates.
Please be assured that we will do everything possible to bring this
event to
fruition."
Hope they get it to the final stages
If not, I will still be there to take in the wonders of the Cabot Trail!
