View Full Version : K100 rear main seal
Hi all, are there more leak points other than the "Lip Type" seal on output shaft of a 2 valve K and the O-Ring under the Nut that holds the clutch housing on? I have broused through the service manuals and can find no reference to any other seals in this area. I think after 20 years mine is just starting to weap. No drops on the floor just slight dampness around the weap hole.
When I tear it apart should I be looking for other possible leak points?
Thanks
Merry Christmas

If its just misted around the weep hole and the clutch isn't slipping, IMO leave it. Others may have a different opinion.

Have you looked through the parts fiche at www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com ?
I agree with Jon. If it's not dripping I would leave it alone. Unless you need a winter project??

Jon & Bruce thanks for your replies.
My only concern is that if the seals fail will it allow oil onto the clutch? I don't like the thought of being miles from home and having the clutch get lubed. Would prefer this be a "Winter" project Vs Oh Sh*t this summer.
My appoligies on the first post. Read it this morning and edited to make more sense (I hope).

Roy,
The rear main seal will almost never put oil on the friction disc. The O-Ring and the transmission input shaft seal CAN. I lived with a small (one drip per day) leak on my K1100 for about 3 years. Finally it oiled the friction disc. Still rode it another month or so, just going easy on the throttle. My rear main seal was like new, it was the .69¢ O-Ring that failed on mine. All this happened at about 123K miles.
I'd probably do it now, rear main, O-Ring (nicely coated with silicone grease) and a new tranny input shaft seal.
