I just bought a new rear tire (DOT date 6 months ago), and the sidewalls are very "dusty" and blotchy. What would be a good solvent or cleaning agent to clean the sidewalls?

Liquid Dish-washing soap and a stiff brush. That's all.

I like wesleys bleache white. it doesnt leave any residue, and will clean mold release and whatever else they put on tires prior to shioment.

Same thing I use on my car tires to remove the brownish build-up, Bleche White. It cleans with minimal scrubbing, wont hurt the wheel finish, and cannot leave any slipery residue on the tire.

I use RU-Glyde. The same lube/detergent I use for mounting tires.

Thanks guys. The dish washing detergent and brush worked surprisingly well. I'll try some of the other products after the tire is mounted.

what ever you do, keep the cleaners away from the rotors; cleaning solution on rotors is the main cause for squeeling brakes

Unless you own a 12GS, then they always squeal! :banghead

Hi Barry! :wave

My brakes squealed the other day but it's not a GS and I don't think cleaners had anything to do with it.

Maybe you have to get some dirt into them first. :stick :laugh

The beauty of RU-Glyde is that it helps enormously with mounting. Cleaning is just icing on the cake.

Hi Bary. Mine only squeel when I use them. I heard something about a tech bulitain for it, but I am enjoying riding too much to take it in.

Hi Veg! :wave

My Airheads squeal/squealed too, can't say if I could blame it on cleaners or not though.

When ya gettin that GS?

Dunno yet. Read my thread on self-employment. Could be next year, could be ten years form now. The future is totally uncertain.

Is this someting I can get at the cage store? I have a changer and have been using dish detergent with a little water in the past to mount tires. Wonder if this stuff will make them any slicker and easier to coax on the rim.

A product I use and like is Meguiar's Gold Class Endurance Tire Protectant Gel. Long name for a good product.

This stuff puts a natural looking low-gloss finish on your tires which lasts for a long time (weeks). Apply, let it soak in, then wipe off and it looks good and doesn't collect dust or dirt. It is slick and is a gel consistancy, so you have to be careful not to get it on the tread of your tires, but I've found it easy to use if you are careful. http://www.meguiars.com/?tire-care/Gold-Class-Endurance

Ooooooh, Greg everything I've ever heard over 28-years is DO NOT USE any tire shine/care products on MC tires.

I don't want to interfere with that 3.25" contact patch between crashing in the rain, road oil, or spilt diesel fuel.

Just my $.02, but could be worth $20,000 plus medical bills.

Just the Rubber Ma'am, just the rubber.

That's very good advice. I am very carful when I apply it, and it dries fairly quickly so there IF DONE RIGHT there is little chance of the treatment getting on your tread area. I've used it for several years with no problems - but if you don't feel comfortable - my advice is don't do it.

Yeah I guess so, I've never had a poser bike, so shinning the chrome and buffing the tires isn't something I've put much interest in. :laugh3

But, you should see my car after a day wax on wax off... :p

Hey now - slick tire side walls are good for at least another 1mph top end!! :rofl

I'd always heard old wisdom that putting stuff on tires keeps the rubber from 'breathing,' or something like that, upshot being that coatings/dressings encourage dry-rot. Dunno about the slick chemistry available today though.

No, the main cause for squeeling brakes is vibrating pads--caused by failure to apply vibration-absorbing grease to edges and piston contact points.

Not that it's relevant to this post, of course.
