View Full Version : Brrrrr....
Just got back from some more break-in miles, broke the 200 mile mark tonight. Ducked over this great little road in the George Washington Wilderness (with a few brief thoughts of both fear and gratitude to all the guys with long rifles running around hunting deer) had some really nice twisties on the route, including a couple harder technical ones.. a real nice way to get used to the GS's cornerring. Which is pretty durned impressive, even on that dunlop. Can't wait to wear it out and try a metzeler :=)
Only 2 downsides to the trip were the sun being square in my face most of the way down, and it being sub-30. It's 25.1 degrees according to weatherbug, and the place the thermometer is at is 800 feet lower and gets about 3 hours more direct sun than I do a day... can you say BRRRR? I didn't plan on being out after dark, or I'd have worn at least one more layer than just my suit w/liner, gloves, and balaclava.
But it sure was a pretty ride through all that farmland :=)

Were you down by Elizabeth Furnace?
Were you down by Elizabeth Furnace?
Yep... sure was. Never been on that side of the river looking back up at Skyline.
Forgot to mention, hit my first dirt road down there when I got "lost" riding around..... not uch of a break-in, but a good baby step in the right direction...

Nothing like a brand new bike to inspire you to push the temp limits, eh? It's 27 here now and I've got a little morning ride planned. My riding buddy for the jaunt is on a three day old sportster. The rest of the guys just looked at me like I was nuts when I suggested riding tomorrow. Rounders rule.

Dawn's supposed to break in around 17 degrees, here.
I'd attempt a dawn ride if it was a jaunt into town.. but I have to commute in 72 miles, and be there by 06:00.... no room for error in outfit, and 75 minutes for frostbite/hypothermia to take hold..... and I just flat am not equipped for fighting it off. Need electrics or -something-.
That being said, I'm not that far off the target.. midriff shielding, a scarf under the balaclava, and a couple layers extra under the outerwear, and I should be good to go.... just commutes are not good places to experiment...

The weatherman here guaranteed we wont see 30 all week. That combined with snow and ice on the roads, keeps my bike in the garage for now.
(no salt is used on the roads where I live, due to the lake being our water supply.)

The mercury rose slightly above 32 degrees today, so i took the r100 for a quick trip around the neighborhood. I had to dodge a few melting snow piles, but it was worth it. A few folks looked at me like I was nuts....even a guy towing a snowmobile gave me the weird look (that one caught me by surprise). Took me longer to wash the salt off the bike then the actual ride (again...well worth it)! :buds

Ian, I have been out riding. I rode down to my in-laws in Riverside on Saturday. I saw a bank sign in Fontana that said it was 85F outside. By that time I had already stowed the jacket and pants liners and the heated jacket, and had all the vents open.
On Sunday night I rode over to my folks' place in Tarzana. On Monday I went out to Agoura to visit my brother's family. I just got home an hour ago, after riding up US-101 the whole way. Very nice, until I was 15 miles from home in Watsonville, and it started to rain... Oh well, I had the heated jacket on and both liners back in.
;-)
Next big ride is the end of next month, to Death Valley Daze. The following weekend I'm going to go to Baja.

Well....it was New Year's Eve -day and the weatherperson called for snow showers to start at 3PMish. So my good buddy and I jumped on our bikes and headed out for a non-electric glove, -grip, -vest, -socks, -underwear assisted ride. A quick 30 minutes of riding left our hands frozen in the 25 degree weather....so we pulled over to warm ourselves on the airhead's valve covers... We headed back and parked the bikes in the warm garage just to miss the first falling of snowflakes (The ride lasted only 63 minutes! - stops not included). I think we were the last to ride in the Capital Region of New York State.... I don't think the ice racers went out after 3PM on the 31st! Here is looking to warm weather and long summer days! Happy New Years All! :buds
