View Full Version : MMm, great ride today...
.. went a lot farther than I originally planned. Went down to Warrenton on the backroads, and after my coffee... proceeded back down 211 to the Culpeper cutoff... then on down to Charlottesville, and up the BRP/Skyline from I-64 down there....
After a wonderful, casual ride, I realised the sun was going down and the road would close. As it was approaching 5pm, I started riding a bit.. shall we say... aggressively... around the twisties to try and beat the Rangers to the gate at the 211 Cutoff. I made it with 2 minutes to spare, and had an awesome sunset ride up the top half of Skyline, too... complete with 3 LARGE bear sightings and lots of curious deer.
My only regret... I left my camera at home... didn't plan on riding that far...

I had a great little Sunday ride too. Work has kept me off the bike for a couple weeks and I was needing it. It was 39 degrees and sunny when I rolled out of the garage and I was layered up pretty good - long johns, flannel shirt, jeans under my First Gear suit and my winter weight balaclava. No electrics. All was good but I think I'm in the market for better gloves. My fingers, out in the airstream on the RS, got pretty cold even with the heated grips on.
I rode east from home on a meandering route toward Rockville Lake in Eastern Indiana. Stopped in the town of Rockville for gas. There were four pickup trucks parked at the station, each with a dead deer in the bed. Guys dressed in camo and wearing orange hats went from truck to truck commenting on each other's prizes. I overheard one comment, "hardly worth shooting," which I took to be a disparaging remark.
My search for a "quaint local eatery" turned up nothing and lunch was at a Wendy's before turning for home. Temps had reached the 50's by then but my only concession was to switch to my lighter weight balaclava.
On the way home I came up behind three bikes, a Wing and two Harleys riding in a tight staggerd formation at 60-65 mph. I followed them at a good distance, not wanting to get in their formation, till I got a chance to pass. I did, on a long straight, level spot with visibility near forever. I gave them wide berth, shifting into 6th as I was beside them at about 100 and stayed on the throttle till they were about a quarter mile behind before backing down to 75 or so. I didn't wave 'cause I like to keep the hands on the bars at those speeds. Must have pissed them off, though, because a few miles down the road they caught me and one of them thought it would be fun to run up my exhaust and stay there for a while before dropping back and doing it again.
After a bit of this game I came to a county road that I've been on many times and turned left onto it. It is a big wide intersection with good sight lines so I layed it over pretty good in the corner just to show off a little. They followed me and resumed their little game of running up my butt and backing off. When they followed me through another turn on to another county road I started to get a little concerned but when we got to the edge of a town they broke off and went another direction.
Got home just as the clouds rolled in and the Colts game started. A good day with a little potential unwanted excitement thrown into the mix.
