A member of the local club has experienced a problem, although a 1 time problem, it is a big problem in my eyes. He said while on a spirited ride he hit the rev limiter on his new R1200RT and the bike just died. He was able to coast safely to the side of the road and restart the bike, but this shouldn’t be. Should it? I have run many bikes, cars, into the rev limiter, sometimes on purpose and some times due to not paying close enough attention to what I’m doing, but none has died. Scared the crud out of me, but never ever died. Anybody else had this happen to them on a hexhead, oilhead, or anything else for that matter? Just wondering.

I've hit the rev limiter on mine a couple times without a problem.

Doesn't a rev limiter cancel some of the ignition pulses (not all) to reduce power and lower RPM? Maybe with the clutch in and little flywheel effect you could get a stall, but at high RPM there out to be lots of momentum.

I think you're right, Frank. When I hit it, it was kind of a "soft" bump, not the "everything's over" kind of bump.

Thats what I understand too. I thought his problem might be unique.

I've gotten to the rev limiter on the ST and it never stallled but it definatley wakes you up, absolutley no power. Not like inline fours at all or even my Superhawk. Maybe it's just cutting the power in half from full on to zip at the most inoportune time.My GS just kinda faded the ST feels like it's going backwards.

I got to the Rev Limiter on a F650GS single banger and even it did not stall. So I am surprised that the R12 stalled. Seems strange.

I've bumped it a two times but it came right back to life, not a problem.

my S doesn't feel like it's missing a beat, i hit the rev limiter in 3rd a few times a week, going from 2 to 4 lane higway, i just bump it up to 4th without pulling in the clutch, which is how some people tell me i should shift

OK.....now I feel like a real lightweight. I didn't even know my RT had one. (Of course, I never even hit the limiter on my Road King either!) Maybe I'll change my name to Oldnslow.

I've invaded the rev limiter on several occasions and found it to be only a wake up call. One of the techs at my dealership even suggested that to hit it once in a while isn't a bad thing at all.....hmmmmm. ;)

Oh man, that is scary I am a Slow Poke and Proud of it and I have hit my limiter. (You can hit it in any gear, so you don't have to be going fast...)

The rev limiter shuts off one cylinder.
Once below red line, normal run shd. occur.
Does on my 04' RT.
Runs like a scalded dog!

whatever you do, don't try my afore-mentioned "bump" shifting technique between 1st and 2nd, you'll notice its kinda rough between 2nd and 3rd, then smooths out above that...................

Hmmm, guess I'm both a slowpoke and a chicken. Have not run up against the rev limiter. Can't imagine doing it on the RT unless I'm really accelerating very hard, and would probably be hitting 70 or more in 2nd gear (?) before it redlined. I just don't tend to ride that way.
