Gas woes

Bike: 1974 R75/6

The right carb floater case leaks at unusual times; it does not happen everyday, nor even every week. However, over the weekend it leaked (about 2 drops a minute) for a day. Looking at the right fuel petcock (which is always off becasue I use the left side) it was off, but appeared to be sweating. Well, it was leaking. I turned it "off" in the other direction and this appeared to stop the leak from there.

I guess my questions are:

Have you experienced the leak?

Should I try to replace the petcock (if so, how much $$ and trouble is that)?

So, I am not sure if the leak is a result of the petcock along or if there are other factors involved, what should I look for?

If I'm not mistaken, you can easily rebuild the petcocks.

Where could I find some guidance on the topic? Clymer? Maunal?

The last thing I want it to muck up the system because I feel frisky and decide to unscrew the petcock to inspect it.

It's been a few years since I had to replace one but as I recall simply buying a new petcock was darn cheap....cheap enough that I bought a new one instead of the rebuild kit.

A brief message to bring the ordeal to an end (hopefully).

I did not purchase a new petcock yet (although it will probably happen in the next few weeks just for good measure).

I drained the tank.
I did disconnected the petcock from the tank and the gas lines.

I found that the gaskets were pretty worn and brown.
I bought gasket material (1/8 inch thick) from NAPA and will be cutting one to fit in the petcock.

I will post if it is not successful.

I just put two new petcocks on our recently-acquired R90S....they were like $23 apiece including tank filters. A bargain.

I found an old replaced petcock (yes, I am a hoarder of semi-useless junk) and remembered why it ended up in the junk parts bin. The choke cables (1975 R75/6) had worn through the backside of the main body, a piece of cloth-covered fuel line on the cable has saved the new one from any wear.
