On mornings where the temperature is 45 degrees or less it is occasionaly difficult to downshift. This problem is most aparent from 5th to 4th and 4th to 3rd. It has never happened in warmer weather or after riding for 15-20 minutes at highway speeds.

1) Is this normal for cold weather riding or should I be concerned?

Some details:

55,200 miles on bike

Trans fluid is BMW Synthetic 75w-140 was new this spring drove approx 12K miles this year.

I lubed the clutch splines with Honda Moly 60 before riding season this spring. Totally removed the tranny and clutch disc so I believe the splines should be OK.

No signs of cluth cable fray at either end. I lubed these also this spring when the bike was in pieces.

Have the occasional "Lazy ankle" missed up shift but never difficult or hard to shift.

Thanks

Could be that the cable has worn thru the teflon internally, or the clutch pivot bushing on the back of the trans needs some lube. I would try the cable first.....

Sounds like cold gearlube. You say it only happens in cold weather & goes away after 15 minutes of riding.
You might try a lower viscosity gearlube, like a straight 90, for the cold weather.

Keep it simple and cheap. Drain out that BMW 75/140 and replace it with Mobil 1 75/90. While you are at it, change out the rear drive oil also.
I believe the 75/140 is too heavy at all times, even here in the Southwest.
The clutch lube job you did should be good for 30,000mi.

By the way, BMW now has a 75W90 synthetic 07 51 0 394 082. The rear drive with the lifetime fill on the K12S, R12GS, etc. is supposed to use 75W90 synth and I heard use Castrol SAFXO 75W90 synth. So I assume that the BMW is probably made by Castrol. Someone somewhere said that lighter gear oil is a better coolant than heavy.

Thanks for the replys. I was leaning towards gear lube being thick but was skeptical since I never have any trouble when shifting up.

Plan on changing the fluids when the weather puts me in PMS mode.

I had the same problem on my 2000 K1200LT. It was a loose shift lever. I kept loosening up, but only after several hours of hard riding. Problem was more evident whenh down-shifting, but sometimes was apparent when up-shifting.
