For the last two days, the engine hesitates sometimes, and it did backfired two or three times.

Any idea?

Disconnect & clean the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). It's on the rear end of the injector butterfly set. Don't remove the sensor, just spray it down in place. If the acting up has just cropped up, kill an easy duck 1st.
I'd also disconnect the main engine processor and spray/clean its contacts too.

I had a 95 K1100LT that did that and after the techs scratched their heads for awhile it turned out to be a bad potentiometer (sp?). Replaced under warranty. I think it has something to do with the fuel mapping.

J,
How many miles on it? Does it always occur at about the same throttle opening?

My '93 had a hesitation like that at about 85K miles and it was a worn spot on the TPS right about 1/3 throttle.
An intermittent like this is difficult to find sometimes. You CAN pull the connector to ensure it's clean and seated but the TPS itself is sealed so there is nothing to spray/clean other than the connector.

You may also have some crossfiring on the secondary wires. You can remove the spark plug cover plate and watch closely in a very dark place to see if there are any arcs bouncing around in there. The secondary wires should each measure about 5K Ohms.

First, many thanks for the answers received. I'll check those points next Saturday.

The bike has 52,000 KM (32,000 miles).

My K1100LT with 102,000 miles is doing the same. However, it comes and goes. I changed the fuel filter and it went away for awhile and now hesitates less frequently. I will try some contact cleaner on the TPS connection. However, it acts more like bad gas.

You may want to try some Chevron Techron fuel treatment. It seems to help.

If you use the Techron injector treatment run two tanks through the engine and change the oil. The oil will be fouled and turn black from the material the Techron clears out.
Also be sure to clean the main connector to the bike computer, under the tool tray. Make sure it is seated firmly.

Hi, All,
Mt '96 K1100LT hesitated in WFO mode (high gear) for more than a year. I changes plugs, changed fuel filter, and also scratched my head. Finally I took it to the (no longer) dealer, who fairly quickly found the TPS (throttle positioning switch) was bad. He installed a new one and I've had no problems since.

Well, two weeks later, my K1100LT is back from the dealer.

It was the Throttle Position Sensor that needed to be ajusted. No need to change it and no water in the gaz.

All is well that ends well (I hope).

p.s. I rode 14 miles on a December 1st. A record, as far as I am concerned. The Earth is really getting warmer.
