:help I'm planning on upgrading my 88 K75C electrical system for auxilliary lights, heated grips, communicator. ect...ect...
I seem to recall reading/hearing about the K75RT having a higher output alternator than the other models.
Can't find any info or access the archives for some reason.
1.Did the RT or LT come with a higher output alternator?
2.if I can find one.How can I tell the alternator I'm about to buy is the higher output.
Thank for any info

Try going through the parts fiche at www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com and compare part numbers for different years and models. I know for instance that the later K100RT has a higher output alternator than the '85 K100RT.
Hope this gets you headed in the right direction.

I got my higher output alternator on ebay for around $100. I think it was from a wrecked R1200CL.
12 31 2 306 955 generator (60A) $512.50
12 31 2 306 020 generator (50A) $557.50
You will have to get a different clutch housing to hold the rubber monkey nuts.
12 31 2 305 329 clutch housing $13.50
You will also have to do a little change to one of the wire connectors that attaches to the alternator. No biggie.

All year's of K100's had the 410 watt 33 amp alternator. It wasn't until the K1100's and the later model K75's did the bikes come with the 700 watt 50 amp alternator. I put the 700 watt alternator on my 91 K100LT way back before e-bay so I bought it new from the dealer. If you buy the alternator from a K-bike it will probably come with the proper coupling to go right onto your bike. The wire connector will have to be adapted. Several oilhead models have the same alternator but with a different coupling. Buy the coupling and they will work also.

An alternator from a 94 or newer (mid 93 was the change over) K1100 bike will bolt in. The electrical connection uses ring connectors instead of the plug your K75 uses. The K1200 units will not work.

The '94 and '95 K75 models had the 50 amp/700 watt alternator.

Dave,
Here is an article I wrote for our local club:
http://www.seatrider.org/techntips/upgrade%20your%20early%20k%20bike%20alternator.htm
As for the parts breakdown, go to http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do
and enter the last 7 digits of your VIN. It will give you the build date of your bike. The 33A alternator was used on all the K75's until 07/1993.
PS Is WHLO (640AM) still on the air there? :)

The late model 50Amp alt is a good mod. Oilhead 50 amp alts are the same unit, but you will need to get the clutch housing, washer and nut from a late model K 50 amp alt. I have modified a few Oilhead alts this way for use on K-bikes. You will also need to change the terminal on the hot wire to the alt from a spade to a ring terminal. Otherwise it is a straight forward bolt up. Remember to lube those rubber bumpers before trying to install it!
