Everyone,

Work is kicking my ass and the weather is crappy. I can't get out and ride like I want (need) to. :violin

So to get my moto-fix, I plan to curl up with a good moto-movie, a pizza, and maybe a beer this evening.

What should I rent????

PS - It's my 800th post :)

FASTER!

Yeah, I know, it's prolly not the "movie" you were looking for, but it's awesome. My wife, who's not a motorcyclist, really enjoyed it and found the whole thing pretty cool.

MAD MAX, duh, make sure its the first one, which is simply called "mad max" and has no "road warrior" or "thunderdome" in the title. this may be the finest hour and fifty minutes of film ever shot by man kind. let people say what they want about citizen kane, casablanca and gone with the wind this beats them all, awsome one liners!

also, i just saw a really neat bio of Johnny Dunlop, but i doubt its gonna be available at the local video store

I've seen Faster 3x. Once in the theater on the big screen, which was spectacular.

There was something out recently called Motorcycle Adventures or something...? A documentary maybe?

Please don't make me pull out my VHS tapes with taped superbike races on them..... :)

Hey Boxergrrlie... How about "Motorcycle Diaries"... Travels of the young Che Gueverra through South America, some of the way on an ancient overloaded bike driven by his friend with Che hanging on the back. I thought it was a great film, if you like bikes, travel, atmosphere and a great human story.

PS... this is my first post, and maybe it might even go through.

I've got a pirate-copy of Long Way Round in US standard, although it was made by a vid producer who recorded it at home and edited it somewhat for better relevance/flow. I never saw it in original form, so I can't say if it improved it or not. I can send you a copy if I can figger out how to copy DVDs in my computer...

I may also be able to make a copy of One Man's Island, a really cool documentary about a Canadian guy who sells everything and moves to the Isle Of Man for six months to realise his lifelong dream of riding in the TT.

If there are any video stores that specialise in obscure or older films, try also looking for the old 'biker menace' films of the 1960s. Those are a hoot sometimes. I've got one called Angel Unchained about a guy who decides he doesn't want to be an outlaw biker anymore and tries to join a hippie commune. But his former gang catches up with him and all hell breaks loose.

I'll second the vote for The Motorcyle Diaries. It's not about motorcycles, but it's a really good film and it's worth seeing for the sound that old Norton makes. One thing I learned from it: "The Mighty One' is a crappy name for a bike!

I'm a sucker for the classics. Easy Ridier is amusing if you watch Peter Fonda try to do a U-turn on his chopper. Their handling skills are pretty poor.

The odd thing is Dennis Hopper rides a BMW today so all wasn't lost.

Have you ever seen the show Mystery Science Theater 3000? It's a show where a guy and his robot sidekicks make fun of bad movies. It's freakin' hilarious. There are a few episodes where the movies are 60's biker exploitation movies, and they're well worth a rental. My special favorites are "Sidehackers" and "Wild Rebels".

I'm still trying to find someone to convert my PAL "25 years of Dakar".

*Or any one of the other gazillion b grade moto movies made in the late 50's early 60's staring, amazingly enough, the same 10 actors. Short on plot, but great moto-spotting!

So, I ended up watching Dust to Glory about the Baja 1000 (thanks xspain)- it's a (mainly) off road race - you can enter with any number of vehicles (trucks, dune buggies, cycles, hopeless class VW bugs) and you can have multiple drivers.

Anyway - the movie was OK. Not nearly enough motorcycle stuff. I wanted to know what bikes they were riding, what modifications they had, etc. None of that was covered. Some nice footage though and an attempt was made to cover the little stories of the race, not just the big multi-million dollar teams. I liked that.

My favorite rider was Mouse McCoy who did the race on a motorcycle and who (unlike everyone else) did the whole 1000 by himself - he didn't share a bike with another rider. The fastest overall was a 2 man motorcycle team who finished in just over 15 hours which is incredible. My fastest saddlesore is about 16.5 hours and that is on highways - they are off-road much of the time!!!

I hated the coverage of the token women's team made up of 'wives, girlfriends and daughters' of the competitors. Kudos to anyone who finished this event, but it was presented in a very demeaning way IMHO.

Also, FYI, I am calling BMW tomorrow and asking if they will sponsor me in the event for 06. I will need a new H2, a team of 30, a helicopter, and a year off of work to practice. :)

PS - I watched the movie with my 67 year old dad who has never been on a motorcycle in his life. After this movie I am a teeny bit closer to getting him on the back of the bike for a ride. Next time we're going to watch "Faster" - I think he'll like it.

Some odd things, in Russia some times they reverse the film. Some scenes it is right hand drive, some left hand drive, exhaust goes from one side of the bike to the other.

I used to work in television show production (and edited on linear machines... not this new computer crap!).

This is a liberty taken by the editors to make it flow better. If they were to edit it straight half of the shots they would be going from left to right, than the other half from right to left.

The human instinct is to go "wow... why did they turn around and head back to england"

When you are shooting a movie to show great pains are taken to make sure that similar shorts have the action traveling the same direction... with three guys in the middle of no where, and great photo opportunities, it's hard to convince or remind them to stay on the same side of the action.

Man, that post was alot longer than I thought it was going to be.

Well, it's not a movie, or even motorcycle related, but I have found watching the a couple shows on the travel channel helps with the cycle urge. One I have found to be particularly good, is 'No Reservation' - http://travel.discovery.com/fansites/bourdain/bourdain.html

He gets sent around the globe and tends to visit the odd places and meet and chat with the real people there (just like when you ride). Sort of reminds me of the daytime version of 'Insomniac with Dave Attell'

If you like Tony Bourdain on TV, you should read his books. "Kitchen Confidential" and "A Cook's Tour" are really entertaining. The latter is far, far better than the TV show of the same name was. The "Kitchen Confidential" TV show really has nothing to do with book, other than having been inspired by it.

I can't believe no one has mentioned EverSmile, New Jersey, a film so absurd you cannot take your eyes off it.

Daniel Day Lewis plays a dental evangelist, traveling Patagonia by motorcycle with a dentist chair sidecar. It's a one-joke movie, as he rides the rural, impoverished countryside preaching dental hygiene. Whenever he's tempted by the ladies (hey, it's Daniel Day Lewis), he eventually resists: "I can't! I'm a dentist!"

Utterly bizarre, but if you liked Dracula's Dog, you'll love EverSmile, New Jersey!

The chicks fighting while on sport bikes under the overpass is not to be missed; especially watch for the product placements. And the classic western scene, riding alongside the moving train at speed, then jumping onto the top and riding along the tops of the cars while fighting and still mounted on their bikes, that is incredible.

But then, I'm easily entertained.

Torque is a great movie as long as you have the right frame of mind as you view it. A group of Gateway Riders went to see it in the movie theater when it first came out and we had a great time.

A funny trivia section from the "Brown Bunny" link regarding the movie. Some of you may have already read it.. but here tis:

"In particular, Roger Ebert called the film "the worst in the history of Cannes" to which Vincent Gallo responded that Ebert was a "fat pig with the physique of a slave trader". Ebert paraphrased a remark of Winston Churchill and responded that "although I am fat, one day I will be thin, but Mr. Gallo will still have been the director of 'Brown Bunny'". Gallo then put a "hex" on Ebert's colon, to which Ebert responded that "even my colonoscopy was more entertaining than his film".
