This was taken by another member of our local club at last weeks Hill Country Rally here in Texas. I don't have a clue as to year or model, but I'd sure like to have one in my collection. Are they rare ? Never seen one. Sweet!

Definitely an R27, a 250cc single. They were made from 1960-66. It was the last single until the Funduros came out.

Definitely an R26, the precursor to the R27. I used to own one (if you care to read the Tale (http://www.deathstar.org/~flash/thumper.html)).

The main visual difference is that the R27 has a separate points cover. The R26 has a single front cover with over all of the electrics.

David,

That's a great story and a cool looking side car though a sad ending unless you still have that Amphicar. Makes me appreciate the current R26 in the photo as I'm sure that bike has had lots of restoration over the years to keep it looking like that.

To me a vintage thumper would be fun to hop on and tool around the neighborhood for short rides in good weather.

Anyone know a price range for a bike like that today in that good of condition ?

I am quite happy to defer to you, Flash, especially as you owned one (and I have not). But it looks to me like there are the rubber baby buggy bumpers under the front of the motor, and I was under the impression that those only appeared on the R27.

There's a stock 1951 R25 on eBay right now (10/19) starting the bidding at $3500. The bike is in Greece, however.
Watch eBay and they appear regularly in the price range of $3000 to $4500, depending on condition.

If you send your money to a guy in Greece advertising that bike on Ebay, you'll probably end up with another style from there and not the style you thought you were ordering. :brow

While on business in Fort Worth this morning, I stopped at a vintage shop, Perry's Motorcycles and saw one there just like the one on the photo. Come to find out, it was the same bike in the photo !! They had a vintage contest that weekend and Perry brought it just to show. It's definitely an R27 and not an R26.

Darryl, you were right all along. I also learned that the R26 has about 15 horsepower while the R27 has 18 horsepower. All the bikes you see there are from Perry's including the R90 which won first place that weekend.

Perry just sold that R27 for $7,500 and all his bikes are restored to pretty much show room new. He has another one all apart in boxes that was a police bike in Germany and it's an unusual green with a silver pin stripe made for the German police at the time. It will soon be put together and for sale if anyone is interested.

It certainly is difficult to tell the difference between the R26 and R27 from one photo that doesn't show the front of the motor.

Not if you look for the rubber baby buggy bumpers in a side view. :)

Please help me learn something here. Are you referring to the rubber bumpers where the center stand contacts the frame in the up position, or some other rubber bumpers?

I'm talking like an expert here and I week ago I couldn't even tell what the heck it was.

Darryl had it right. The main difference between the two is the fact that the R26 engine was hard mounted to the frame and the R27 was rubber mounted at four points to the frame. It's also much easier at a glance to tell the two apart from the left side of the bike because of the points cover showing on that side at the front of the engine.

Their lead mechanic said he actually preferred an R26 over the R27 though I'm not sure why.

Check out Perry's Motorcycles (http://www.perrysmotorcycles.com/)
Perry is like the side car king in the US. Check out his used bikes. Way Cool!

My R26 had rubber-coated canvas washers between the motor and the frame (like the airhead headlight dealies). They looked pretty much like what is in the photo. They weren't "rubber baby bumpers" but they WERE black donuts in that position. Hence my confusion.
