Well, I had my first BMW newbie mistake! I thought I would change my oil for the big Fungal ride coming up, so I set out to do it. I glanced through the tech manual, it's only an oil change for pete's sake how hard can it be?? :uhoh Well, I took the oil filter cover off first, BEFORE the drain plug. I can't say why I did this, only that I looked at the pictures in the manual and it showed the filter all nice and DRY! I thought "I guess it's just a protective cover for the oil filter", I never guessed it was part of the oil pan! :doh
Well, I did manage to catch about half the oil in the drain pan and the rest was all over my garage floor! A whole roll of shop towels and half a thing of kitty litter later and I was all cleaned up. Thankfully putting the new oil back IN was uneventful. :D I THINK I'll remember the correct sequence next time.

No one was born with wisdom. We earn it through the mistakes we make. Kinda makes ya feel like :banghead sometimes but then ya have funny stories to share with others. Have fun on the ride.

At least your manual shows you how to change your oil.

I personally have been making mistakes all my life, I don't plan on stopping now. :brad

Now you have a story to tell :p

You got off easy, in my house the sequence is as follows. Spill occurs, dog immediately walks through it and takes off running. Play time !!

Never did this on a BMW, but....

One of my first oil changes on an old Honda, many years ago. As I was filling the oil, I noticed that it was coming out as fast as I was putting it in!!! Forgot to replace the drain plug. :banghead I was lucky, tho. The drain pan was still under the bike. :clap Only wasted about a half a quart.

We all do it. MOST of us only do it once. :laugh

My oil changes on the bike have gone smoothly. The first time I changed the oil in my lawnmower, though. Hoo boy. There's not much oil in there, but it's kinda tough to get it out cleanly.
