I've got a 1100 Sa with a recurring problem...seems my ignition switch contact that turns on the tail lite and lic. plate lite must get corroded from the weather and often will not allow the rear lites to illuminate. Not good. Besides an unsafe condition, John Law frowns on this. Wiggling the key will get it going usually, but it's getting worse. The mounting bolts for the switch are BMW's version of a security/theft proof head design, and a special tool is required for removal. Any quick fixes, other than contact cleaner followed by some lube...? this will be my third switch, BMW replaced the first one as a "goodwill" warranty claim near 50K, 100K currently.

As a cheap next-to-last-resort, instead of contact cleaner, try WD-40. The cycle the switch a few times. It can't hurt.

I finally saw an exploded view at my local dealer yesterday. Seems I need to replace the contact block underneath the key switch. Fairly simple swap-out. 90$ and 10 hours later after I find all the microscopic screws that hold the darn fairing on when I drop 'em on my immaculate garage floor.Grrr.
