I'm afraid the cliché "More money than brains" comes to MY mind. Then again, I often have my '69 Ducati Scrambler in MY living room, but I'm restoring it, and it's just plain easier in the living room than the garage.

That's wrong. Motorcycles are dynamic sculpture.

To each his own, I guess. Sounds like the guy rides, just doesn't plan on riding this particular bike. I'd love to be able to keep a bike in the family room or the living room, to admire during non-riding weather.

Isn't easier to just move into the garage? Better than being in the doghouse.

I'm jealous! I live in Manhattan (in a reverse penthouse -- on the ground floor!) and I'd be evicted if I even rolled my bike into our lobby!

But then there are a lot of people who live on this island: from the Homeless-sleeping-on-a-bench to Donald Trump... However, even the Donald, I don't believe, owns as fancy a saddle (http://trainforresults.com/penthouse%20pics%20018.jpg) as the one near the window behind the beemer...

If I had more money than god, and had a K12S parked in my living room, you bet it wouldn't be pressed against the wall. I'd have it pointing out that picture window, so I could sit on it and pretend I'm in a better place.

No doubt that saddle goes with the horse he keeps in the bathroom! :brad

Hey Gail, you could rig it up to one of those stationary bike trainers right in front of your 10 to the power of 5 sq. in. flat panels and play helmet cams from the Isle of Mann! :german

That seems to me to be the most fullsome and intelligent summary of this whole story.Wish I'd thought of it instead of just scratching and shaking my head thinking,Too much information...
Thanks for the wit,Gail!

How about pointing at a big plasma screen TV running an Isle of Man DVD?

Actually, a few years ago when;

Cannondale made motorcycles, specifically a Fuel-Injected 450cc 4-Stroke Dirt bike with all the premium bolt on's available: Ohlins, Accel Red Line rims and hubs, Brembo binders, lots of Carbon Fiber stuff, etc.

I wanted to buy one ($7,899?) and hang it on my wall just to look at.

The bike ended up being to finicky and un-reliable but what a beautiful work of art it was. They have gone belly up in the MC world, so if I had it would be worth more now than it cost. Missed another opportunity, damn. :banghead

Tried to by an MGB from a friend one time and he refused. He had done a nice job of restoring it and his asking price was reasonable. The reason he would not sell to me was because I would use it.

Don't understand not using the bike!

ahahha,

what a db, putting the navigation system on a stationary bike takes the cake, forget asking, i'm gonna go steal this thing, the dude deserves it.............

this reminds me of a friend of mine who bought a biancci fixed gear road bike for like 3 grand and just hung it in his appt for decoration, i'm not against wasting money for no good reason, or "art" in its varied forms, but i'm not a big fan of accumulating things just cause, that bike could make someone very happy in many more ways than it ever will sitting in an appartment (although the milage for that bike this year may be very close to many other "posers" who's bikes are actually registered and in the garage)

I'm not quite as offended as most of the posts in this thread. I would allow a little diversity before pushing the judgement button. [Philosophers have written occasionally about the use of objects, and intention in the use of objects.]

And even using some of the values expressed in this thread, I would keep in mind that the guy rides, and he might ride this one some day. Just not now.

Lastly, unless he got it at an extreme bargain, he helped BMW recoup a little of their R&D on this project. Okay, that's a real second order effect, but on the face of it I don't object to him contributing to BMW.

i said this over on the yankee beemer site;

putting a navagation unit on this bike and calling it art is like putting horn rimmed glasses on michaelangelo's david and calling it "better"

Kind of the opposite, a well known vintage BMW guy picked up an essentially new R75/5. It had about 120 miles on it. Asked me if I was interested in it, but I said no; however, if he were to put 5,000 miles on it, then I'd buy it.

I bought an R90S with only 18,000 miles on it a few years ago, but now it has 43,000 on it. It's just not worth it to me to pay a premium for a "new" old bike, because I'll surely ride it. I just came back from a 1400 mile trip down to Death Valley on my R60/2...

There has been a R100RS in the ON for a while for $20,000! It has zero miles on it and was never even factory prepped. I wonder how many collectors would cringe if I bought it then made it my daily commuter? This could go both ways.

yeah, thats a tough one, cause its such a rarity to have a bike like that come onto the market. i had a chance to buy a 79 cb900f still in the box around the time i bought the airhead. the guy wanted 10 grand for it, but i thought about it and that bike wouldn't get me anything over a well kept model from the same year with 10K on the clock and a 3000 dollar price tag

Meh. There are plenty of guys in Japan who pay enormous prices for vintage guitars and then put them in plexiglass display cases. It's not just an American thing.

At last year's Cycle World International Motorcycle Show in Dallas I bought two raffle tickets for a Vincent Black Shadow (I usually only buy one, so I was serious about this). When I got home I told my wife if I won this bike I'd take it out once for a ride and then install it in our living room, and that I meant it. Needless to say I didn't win and my wife was relieved. But I still envision it in it's spot, with that incredibly beautiful motor and that mile deep black paint, sigh!

...but I really can't imagine buying a vehicle and not riding/driving it. Putting it in one's house, yeah, I get that. While I've never done it myself, I know plenty of riders that keep their bikes inside of their homes. A friend parks his HD Softtail Heritage in the corner of his kitchen during the winter so it never gets cold.

But to take a brand new motorcycle like the K1200S and make it essentially a sculpture just seems wrong to me. Motorized vehicles are made to be used, ESPECIALLY BRAND NEW ONES! And old ones. And ones a few years old. I think you get my drift.

Or maybe that's one of the reasons we love our BMW's: because they do have a sculpted look to them. The NY Museum of Modern Art has been known to take articles like bicycles (really great ones, meant to be ridden) and hang them up. The BMW's we like are great vehicles, but, in another sense, they are also works of art. JMHO.
