but we still have a long way to go, here is a thread/member comparison with another board i'm on (non motorcycling)

Our members have made a total of 1522978 posts
We have 172 registered members

that is an average of 8,800 post per member vs 14.5 per member, granted, our # of active members here is tiny in comparison to those registered, whereas on that other board, people get deleted for not posting (its a mean, mean place) both boards have been around since 2003

so i guess the reason i posted this is WHAT CAN WE DO, we, the "active posters" of the moa forum to make the forum more attractive to new users??? lets use this space to brainstorm.

Bang those numbers against the average age, income and career of each board. You may find your other board attracts people who are more inclined to spend their free time online. That does not seem to be the case in MOA land.

I am very dubious about internet numbers and what they mean.

To your question 'what can we do' I am reminded of the real baseball field built for the movie Field of Dreams. The film gave us a common use of the advice - Build it and they will come.

A friend went to Iowa and as part of the trip visited the site. She came back with the observation that there were bus loads of people coming but no one was playing ball when she was there. She thought there was a point that was being missed.

I support the idea and goal of improving the site. For myself I am just riding, not lurking as much, and posting more. Stikes me that is what it is about. :dunno

Forums like this have a sort of (and I hate to use the phrase) tipping point. They get to a size where there's lot of activity, which pulls folks in and gets them to contribute.

We're almost at that point and I'm seeing pretty regular growth in the number of registered users we see. We're now seeing, on a regular basis, better than 300 registered members visiting each and every day. Are they the same folks every day? I don't think so, which leads me to believe that the number of regularly active users we have is higher than the ~300 number.

So, I think we're close to hitting the tipping point. I think you'll also see more references to this place and the web site in ON over the next year or so, which will also help drive activity.

Keep at it folks, just do what you're doing and it'll grow.

A good message board is like a nice small town. People move in because they like the small town atmosphere and end up turning the small town into a smaller version of the place they came from. If the board becomes to big it will become impersonal and unmanageable. The other side of the coin is that most of us want to be the last one in before the gates are locked.

I say let the board grow at its own pace.

I think nature is taking its course. New topics and categories will emerge. I think that those running the Forum have experience from Adventure Rider wherein they'll sidestep some of the problems with having too few controls on threads.
I think we can improve by examining the successes and failures of other sites.
I live in a small town but I enjoy meeting new people.
I'm IN on this one. Hooyah.
