Hey guys, I'm still getting used to the '99 R1100RL that i bought two weeks ago, and I noticed something when I was driving the other day:

When you turn the key, and the sidestand is up, and the engine kill switch is ready to go, you get the slight buzz of the computer as it starts up; it probably lasts 1 or 2 seconds.

but i noticed when i was driving down a slow street the other day, that there is a persistant noise similar to that that continues as long as the bike is running. it's definitely an electrical sound, as opposed to anything coming out of the motor. it's quieter than the startup sound, but similar in pitch/tone.

is this normal? it is the type of thing that would take me a while to notice as i get familiar with the bike, but i don't know if this is normal or not. everything functions and runs on the bike just fine otherwise.

I think you are hearing the fuel pump in the gas tank.

Ok, is that normal though?

I think so. Mine does that too. A FI system needs constant fuel pressure, pump is always running.

Interesting point though, I never gave it much thought. I'll pay attention to it in the cage once with the window open, see if I hear anything.

i've never heard mine while riding, but defenetly at startup, thats what the noise you hear is, i've heard the pump will get louder if the fuel filter is old and causing blockage, or if the pump is on its way out

I had to replace my fuel pump earlier this year, as it seized. I now listen for the comforting sound when I turn the key.

I think you will find that the pump is NOT always running. It runs at startup for a few seconds in order to buildup fuel pressure and then the pressure regulator shuts it off. I believe it cycles on/Off to maintain constant pressure.

Maybe get one of those winshields from the 1150R thread and you won't hear the noise due to the new wind noise....lol
