Does anyone know where the best deal on getting a case(s) of bmw oil would be? That is including the shipping cost associated with an internet purchase as opposed to just buying it at the local dealer. Does it make sense to hedge the rising oil prices by buying cases of oil for future oil changes? I know we are only talking a few dollars, but why not save a few bucks if I am going to change the oil at regular intervals anyway? Just thought I would see what others are doing. Disclaimer: this is not an oil thread. :D

Well, a starting point might be Chicago BMW where they give 20% off all BMW parts. Shipping is usually pretty reasonable.

...but I plan on picking up a case this Saturday from my local dealer. I'm assuming 12 quarts per case, right? 3 gallons? That would definitely weigh more than 20 lbs.
I'll just support my local shop.

Because it is so heavy, oil is very expensive to ship. Your best bet is to negotiate a case price with your local dealer. It's hard to save money on mail order oil.

BMW does not make oil. Buy similar oil for less money that BMW has not pasted their label on, locally, and avoid the cost of freight.
BMW does not make fuses or light bulbs or seals or bearings or lots of other things that are ubiquitous and available anywhere for a lot less money.
If BMW sold gasoline from a pump with a roundel on it, would you pay extra for THAT?

Yeah, if you can stand to wait a LONG time for it to ship.

...Golden Spectro, correct? You do have to pay a little bit extra for oil that has the "roundel" or the "Wing" (Honda) on it, for sure.

It depends. I think Castrol is making some of the oils now...the new synth which is suitable for wet clutches, and maybe the new synth 75W90 gear oil.

Mobil makes some great oils too, the Drive Clean is very good and is about $15/case. The dry clutch in the Boxer makes a car oil feasible. If you check the ratings Mobil stands tall when you compare even against some of the higher price oils.

Now that the warranty is a thing of the past, I buy from my BMW/Honda dealer the dino/synth blends of various brands in gallon jugs. I think these oilhead engines are pretty robust, and will last a long time without having to get the very best bestest oil.
Hey, I clean the Beemer with Hondabrite. So there!
