you can get a screen cap on a windows box by holding
down "control" and then pressing "print screen." (print
screen should be up on the top of the keyboard, near
the function keys...) (also, holding "alt" and hitting print
screen will give you just the active window....)
then open paint. start ---> accessories ---> paint.
then hit cntrl-V to paste the screen capture. it'll ask if
you want the bitmap enlarged. tell it, "hell yeah!" then
click file ----> save as and be sure to save it as a jpeg
to keep the file size reasonable.
bubba - you stole my background! ;)
oh, and just like with a photo, you can use irfan view
to *easily* resize the image as i did. :thumb

Okay, let's see if this works. If there isn't a photo, it didn't!
This is from this year's Dinks rally in Pontiac, IL.
Okay, it worked but it's small. Here's a larger one, I think.

My friend had some pictures of me on his computer... when he left the room I tried to set one as his desktop background...
Much to my pleasure the re-sizing didn't go so well. Here is the result:

Oh! And now that y'all know the ctrl-Print Screen trick, here is an awesome prank to play on your co-workers!
Ctrl-printscreen their desktop....
Set that saved jpeg as their desktop image....
Than clear all their icons off their desktop....
Everything will look normal... they wont be able to click on anything! Weeeee!!!

Welcome to the fold. There is no going back. :evil
shift-command-3 will take a screen shot and save it to your desktop. Open this file (.png) in an image editor, resize, and you're ready to post.
shift-command-4 will bring up some cross hairs. Click and drag to grab a slice of the screen.
shift-command-4 followed by the space bar will bring up a camera and will highlight any window it is over. Click and you will have a shot of just that window (even if it's layered under other windows).

Ian
I like it this way. My first pc was a Scelby 8 (sp?) kit. It had 2K of ram. 8 toggle switches, a push button and 8 leds. Wirewrap.
I interfaced data to the IBM 1800 and everything that followed as well as PDP 8s, 10s, etc. So I know about folders...even though they are a somewhat recent thing for me. This pc is about used up, a P3 450, which I built up with an ABIT board. My next one will probably be an HP from Sam's...but it's hard to retire totally. I've even thought of getting a laptop, and keyboard. Free up a whole desk in the hamshack.
I thought my desktop would elicit at least one response besides the one from my wife whenever she uses it...

I am officially coming out of the closet... kinda. I use a mac for some stuff... the coolest thing are the xml gadgets you get when pressing F12. Oh... and Graffle purely rocks.
Other than that, the thing drives me NUTS because it works exactly contrary to the PC, which pisses me off. Being contrary is no way to win converts, but Apple seems to be perenially happy with selling <5% of the personal computers in the world.

If the mac OS functioned the same as windoze, would it still be the mac OS - that which makes the mac, for some, the clear choice?

hahahaha.... You know what Graffle is! I am an Information Architect... what would you expect?
BTW, it's Win-DUHS, not Win-doze. Some people call it Wierdoze. Not me! :p
Honestly... I am computer agnostic. I hate all computers equally!

ha! i've been toying with the notion of a ride-in/campout... and would be interested to see if there were any interest. the place is in western NC and the mountains on the right side are inside the smoky mountain np.
there is one slight matter of the road to our house, which i affectionately refer to as our twit filter.
about a mile of gravel road with some interesting switchback turns.... but once there, we have a great flat grassy spot... actually two spots, plus an HP2-sized deck, ifyouknowhaddimean!

Solution:

No twits here! So... if this gets serious, we could have a service where you get to ride in a car to the top and your bike gets ridden by someone who can ride on a gravel road with switchbacks.
Hey... we've put some thought into this!
In reality, pavement is nice... unless it's the middle of winter. *Then* you need the gravel for traction! I've had some interesting rides up and down the hill in the snow on the G/S.

Holly -- I still have a Commodore in a box in the attic (along with a printer, tape and floppy drives and some games for it). I haven't hooked it up in years and doubt if it still works. Sometimes I do wonder about it though . . .

Well, Campanula, anyone who hasn't checked our ages now knows that neither of us is spring chickens. I also have my Norton Atlases sitting in the garage covered in dust. Time to see if they run before I dust off the old 64..
