We are having some watches made for our store and we are trying to decide on a name for them. Choices are:
Aeon
Epoch
Cadence
Tempo
Tempus
What say you riding family? Which do you like and why. Sorry I do not know how to post a poll and I am in a hurry to get out of here this morning. Thanks in advance. Let me also add that the watches are assembled in THE USA of Swiss parts and are an excellent time piece for the money. I am geeked to be able to sell something of this caliber.

Aeon - reminds me of that cartoon (and soon to be movie) Aeon Flux it had a sexy girl, sexy girls sell stuff, its a fact
Epoch - sounds imposing, like it might hurt your wrist
Cadence - too sad and mellow, i think of the irish countryside, not watches
Tempo - Here ya go, its both exciting and descriptive, quick paced and time related. i think we have a winner!

Tempo reminds me of that Ford car.
Need more info - price point, target market, etc. Otherwise it's just a WAG.

The watches are priced from $170 up to 3k or so for the ones with the diamond accents. I suspect that the majority we sell will be in the $170 to $500 price range. Our target market is mainly 25-54 year olds with 40 plus a close second. Not a watch for the rich or the wanna-be rich, but a good solid Swiss timepiece. We are thinking of offering them with a lifetime warranty. I have spoken with a jeweler on the East Coast who carries them and he is confident enough in them to stand behind them for as long as the people own them.
"Tempo" is Italian (I think) for "time" which is why it made it to the play-offs.
Loraz - thanks for your valuable input....see me after class!

I agree. Tempo reminds me of the crappy car and the musical term, and cadence gives me bad flashbacks to listening tests at 8 AM and trying tto figure out the voicings of chords to determine if a PAC, an IAC, a PC, or a DC was used. And if you know what the hell I'm talking about good onya because I barely do, and I almost have two derees in this stuff.

in my mind, each name has a different time scale associated with it.
tempo is short-length time scale. songs have tempo, sports events have tempo, and lastly, ford has tempos.
cadence is analogous to tempo - short time scale. walkers, marchers, and cyclists have a cadence. i associate the word cadence with athletic activity. is this watch sporty?
epoch is a loooooong time scale. does this watch have a fourth hand to trace the epoch? that'd be cool - it wouldn't even have to move. :D when i think of an epoch i think of a long time, on a human scale. tens to hundreds of generations. an epoch started before i was born and will end after i die.
aeon - (eon.) this one of course is the longest time scale, namely a million years. aeon is a neat word, it looks otherworldly to me.
an aeon watch would also be cool. you could have an outer band of eons, and ones that have passed, like hadean and archean could appear behind the "eon hand." (should i start singing "particle man" by TMBG now?) the eon hand could be pointing to our current eon of course, the phanerozoic.
that said, please ignore me. i have often shown a total inability to anticipate what regular consumers want. i'm not like them and i value things very differently. as a zeroth order example, i don't wear/own a watch. :D
but cool names, and a clever way to differentiate higher cost/quality merchandise by a longer timescale.
any thoughts on a more middling time scale product? perhaps the "cesium-137?" or to continue the radioactive theme, but to go for a much shorter time, the "polonium?"
fun stuff.
let us know when you've got pics of them and what name you choose.

errrr, ahhhh - any chance of getting you guys to vote on the four names offered for a vote as opposed to your other suggestions?
Would you like Tempus any better than Tempo?

No offense but I think all the choices suck. They all kinda blend into the landscape like so much other commercial-name mishmash these days.

tempus in latin means "of time" but also can mean "part or "section" but most people who didn't waste 6 yrs of their life on a dead language won't know that ;)

ok, i'll get inside the box.
in order of preference:
1. aeon
2. epoch
3. cadence
4. tempo
i'd still rank tempus 4th. i imagine this conversation in ancient rome:
boss: we're short handedus. we need to hire some workii.
HR manager: permanent employees are hard to find. the huns keep killing them.
boss: can we get a tempus?
HR manager: i'll check with the tempus agency.

I'd go with Tempus and add Fugit. In latin, "Time Flies" in colloquial americana,
time fug it!!! Your choice.
Latin always suggests classic, aristocratic and dead (sorry, forget the dead part, just slipped out.)
Aeon--too new wave, ambient, like deep breakfast, music from the heart of space
Epoch-- we're talking "now" not the next ice age!!
Cadence--Only good for marching and bagpipe music
Tempo-- Something that Luci and Desi would do.
BTW are you paying somebody to come up with these names???? If so, ask for a refund.
Just kidding!

Need more info. So this is a generic Swiss watch right? It's not Swatch, Tag Heuer, or Rolex so how does one associate with the naming? Like Rolex Sub-Mariner, President, Daytona or Tag Heuer Le Mans, Formula 1, etc...
Is there a Swiss brand name with or do we just pick a name that is not associated? People associate brand and names with quality and cost.
Guess I’d go with the order below without other input:
1. aeon
2. epoch
3. tempo
4. cadence

The deal is that these are "private label" watches. They are assembled in NJ by the Belair company - they have been doing this since 1946. They spend ZIP promoting their watches and sell to little mom and pop stores like us. I could call them Cliff watches if I want to. Did some research on the company - nothing but good things including 20 minutes of praise from a 3rd generation watch repair guy in NM (he is Rolex certified, etc etc). He flat out told me that this is the best bang for the buck as far as watches are concerned and said if he took the guts from a Belair watch and swapped with guts from an Omega I would be hard pressed to tell the difference. He said his brother sells them with a lifetime warranty and only has to give one or two watches away every year. (Plus he was wearing one on his wrist when we talked!) That clinched it for me.
So now I gotta come up with a short name because it will be more fun than just selling Belair watches.

Aeon for sure...
other names are too "catchy".
How about an Aeon "Rider RS"? GS RT...

Cliffy, ya got any pictures.
Stainless steel, case, band, what do they most closely resemble? Maybe you could get BMWMOA to market these on the Country Store?
I think is kind of like those 'Your Logo Here' brand watches.
And it's looking like Aeon is winning

Better ignore me too, I'm perfectly happy with my $18.99 Acqua Indiglo. :nod
Aeon
No particular reason. Keep in mind I do not wear a watch.

In the 90s there was a cartoon on MTV of a on at late night (for me, it was probobly 10:30). The name was Aeon Flux and she was lethal - see link
http://www.girlswithguns.org/long/aeon.htm
The name Aeon might be a coup as the concept of the lethal hot chick is (finally) being used as a premis for a new movie.

I still like The Mighty Chronos but it had better be a BF watch

Believe me, I am preparing to offer a watch with the Rounder logo. Probably after some snow flies. I gotta get set up with the company AND I want to play around with their watches before I try to put the Holy Name of Rounder on one. The do have some titanium sport watches with screw down crowns that will be watertight.......stay tuned.

Hey Cliffy,
Exnay on the Tempo thing. Yea we know it means time and it used to be a Ford, but it's too Procter and Gamble. I could make something in a spray bottle that will clean stuff with a name like that or even laundry detergent.
Aeon is more of an entity to be a brand for a watch. Cadence gets my heart pumping. Epoch is no contest and Tempus sounds like something a woman could use to plug a body part.
There you have it.

Gosh - sounds like a nice product, but I dont like any of the names on the list. Maybe something like "Metropolitan", after the Paris underground, or you could name it the "Pink Floyd" - they did the best song on the general theme of time ever.
Sorry I can't be more helpful. On your list I like Cadence the most, but t kind of sounds like a sports watch, which this isn't.
Seriously, best of luck and I applaud your venture.

I own two watches - one dual sport model with all of the farkles and one dress-up timepiece with a single, tasteful diamond on the face. I am not really into watches (as much as I am into earrings and shoes), but I am into words. Words have meaning, associations, they can look cool, sound cool, and feel good to say or be difficult to say. Here is my .02:
Tempus reminds me of 'tepid.' It doesn't look, sound or feel good.
Tempo reminds me of the car. Like Tempus, it doesn't look, sound or feel good. There is a hard 'p' in the middle which stops it cold. Tem-po is not sexy.
Cadence. It's interesting that all of the words on the list are two syllable words. I think that 3 syllable words tend to be more elegant than 1 or 2 syllable words. (I'm not overthinking this am I Cliffy??:)) Cadence has good associations for me - I think of something going on and on with a steady rhythm.
The word Epoch always reminds me of the word eunuch. I don't know why. Epoch is not a pleasant word to say or to hear: Eh-puck. Ick.
Aeon is probably my favorite because the 'a' and the 'e' next to each other are uncommon and it looks cool. Ee-on rolls off of the tongue better than any of the other words on the list. Neutral-to-positive associations: an eon is a long time, but add an 'A' at the front and it is stylish too!

One thing in "Aeon's" favor is that you have a built-in logo for it:

I believe that he chose TAS. "They all suck."This is an interesting name for a watch. It will probably sell very well in the younger portion of the market demographic.
