I was cruising down 15 South (in MD) just north of Frederick doing about 80 when I had to check up because a minivan in front of me slammed on his brakes. I abruptly closed the throttle and grabbed the clutch and the bike cut out on me. Luckly, I was able to coast off to the left shoulder, but had a pretty good scare as the surface of the shoulder was covered in coarse gravel. Anyone know why my GS would cut out like that? I keep up with all the services and have no reason to believe anything is remiss from an electrical standpoint. I tried to recreate the condition on a less busy road, but could not get the bike to stall. Was this just a freak event or should I get the bike checked out? Is there something about the abrupt drop in RPM or suddenly taking the load off the engine that may have caused this?

Just speculating here, but could you have accidently hit the kill switch with your thumb while reacting quickly in panic mode? (I did that once)

It rarely occurs, but appears to be more prevelent when tune up is needed and when the motor is hot....

Screwtop I wanna help because we're on the same bike and you're a bowhntr.

You didn't mention if during this 'panic' stop you were on the binders just as hard as the minivan, I will assume that maybe you were, and that you also had the fortitude to pull in the clutch and chop the throttle all at the same time. Is it possible that you chopped the throttle, grabbed a foot full of rear brake, pulled in the clutch and front brake and then realized you had no motor? New 'panic'? last panic forgotten... :brow

It's possible even with ABS to lock up the motor under that one second of 'Alignment between the planets' and simply stalled the engine. I've done that a thousand times on my dirt bike, I just let the clutch back out and bump start the bike and keep going.

Just a thought :wave

SFDOC,

Thanks for the input. I actually am not sure what I did but I think some of the possible explainations that have been offered, and the fact that I could not get the bike to do this again has eased my mind a bit.

I'll abandon the GS in favor of the Q2 this Satuarday in hopes to put some meat in the freezer. Ya gotta kill it before ya can grill it.

Regards,

I've had the same problem with mine. I'll be moving along (60 mph or above)and grab the clutch to switch gears or downshift and the engine dies. I've had it die in the middle of turns, on straight lines etc. I can't reproduce it, find any problems. I haven't had it happen in awhile, so I'm not worrying about it.
