My RT does that sometimes. I've not had that problem with my GS, though.

My GS makes a smell like that when I slip the clutch trying to work it out of the big rocks in creek bed or while starting back out after dropping it on a steep uphill section in the AZ mountains. I haven't had it happen on pavement, maybe you are slipping it a little more than neccessary on the road. :stick

I have a new GS and I also have the burning smell. I thought it was the muffler getting heated up during the break in process.

I am also having the stinking clutch phenomenon on my R12GS. I have done a very small amount of off-roading, and I could definitely smell it then. However, I get this smell a lot when I am riding on pavement. I commute over 75 KM each way, most of it highway with a short amount of stop-and-go on both ends. It is at the end of the commute the I smell the clutch, usually as I stop at traffic lights.
I have about 10,000 KM on the bike now, and have complained to the dealer several times. They say that they cannot detect any problems. I figure that I will just keep complaining every time I go by until the clutch burns out, then bitch/moan/cry until they replace it under warranty.

When I first got my GS, it used to burp a little trans fluid out of the trans vent. That would run down onto the muffler and make some nasty smells.
It eventually went away after a couple thousand miles and the trans works just fine.

Mine sometimes smells like a new car engine when it is hot. It might be the anti-corrosion chemicals burning off the hot engine.
Of course if your bike is half a year old that can't be the case.
