View Full Version : Petaluma, CA day rides???

Any suggestions for day rides in the Petaluma area? My wife and I will be in the Petaluma area for at least a week during the Christmas holiday, I plan on bringing the R90/6 to sneak a few days on new roads. Thanks!

There are lots of wonderful riding roads in that area. Get a AAA map of the area and start looking at the little roads.
To the east, the hills that separate Petaluma from the Napa Valley are full of neat little roads. Try out the ones that run between CA-12 and CA-29 all the way up to Calistoga.
To the west, roads like Lucas Valley Rd., Marshall-Petaluma Rd., Wilson Hill Rd., CA-1, and the roads around Mt. Tamalpais are great. But CA-1 as it comes into the Stinson Beach will have a ton of traffic on a nice weekend.

I second Darryl's advice.
My wife's *favorite* road is one that goes through Glen Ellen, past her favorite winery... Glen Ellen.
From Santa Rosa (just north of Petaluma) find Bennett Valley Road. It heads SE from CA12 (Maple Ave). The road changes names to Warm Springs Road, and then jinks left on CA12 near Glen Ellen, then right on Trinity Road... down the hill to the Yountville area.
Go just a bit north on CA29 to CA128 east and head out toward the Lake Berryessa area.
By that time, you will probably be ready to turn around... or maybe take the Chiles-Pope Valley Road north to the Howell Mountain/Deer Park Road, which heads south through Angwin.
Turn left/south on 29/128 and in St. Helena look for the Spring Mountain Road on your right... which will take you back to Santa Rosa.
Great riding!

I was out there all summer, get up with the club that rides out of Santa Rosa BMW (check thier website). Or just check in with KBASA, I met up with Dave a couple of times while I was down there.

In the past, I've had that week off of work, so I should have some availability to join you for a ride. I'm just a bit down the road from Petaluma here in San Rafael.
I'd love to show you some of our nifty roads. I think you'll really enjoy them.

Kbasa, that would be great! Any route you want is fine with me. I'll be staying just a few miles south of Petaluma.
Also, I'm not opposed to others joining us. Any forum members going to be in the area??? I'm not into large group rides, but I'd like to meet any forum folks if they are in the area during the holiday.
Or, if you need an excuse to get out of the house and go ridding during the holiday season, I can provide a reason to get on your bike.

That'd work for me. I live nearby. Please drop me a shout if this ride happens. My likely availability is Saturdays only, but if it works that would be great! There's tons of good riding in the area. I've always wanted to run Stewarts Point, this would be a good excuse.

I see breakfast at the Bovine, with a ride up the coast to Stewart's Point and Skaggs Springs road in our future.
That's about as fine a day of riding as you're going to find.

We'll see what happens with Bluestune. When he's more settled and I know what my vacation time is like, we should definitely put a ride together. That one, up the coast to Skaggs, is one of my personal faves, but I'm open to other routing suggestions as well.
101 to 128S to Lucas Valley Road is neat too. We could cut in at Tomales and come over Chileno Valley, or something. There's a ton of options.

Is 30 days enough! I'm sure my employeer would understand If I were to spend and extra 3 weeks away from work. Let's see if I can get a doctors note for some "Two Wheel Therapy." RX: Take two rides, one in the morning and one in the afternoon for 30 days, drink favorite adult beverages every evening after last ride. Call me in 30 days for RX renewal. Works for me. I wonder, can I get inusrance to cover the cost???? :brow

Let's coordinate a bit when we get closer and know what the weather is going to be like. It can be a little dodgy that time of year.
The hills are usually nice and green, though, so it's really pretty.

I should be good for the 16-18 (the same weekend of the Cycle World International Motorcycle Show in San Jose) and maybe the 23rd (burn a vacation day), but probably not the 24 (unless we got a *really* early start).

Tubby's Restaurant in Cotati
"For the longest time, this place was a landmark drive-in diner straight out of Grease - including through the 50's and 60's - at the corner of Old Redwood and Gravenstein Highways, where local bikers, hot-roders and truckers would stop off for a little grub and to check out the scene. That spot has since been bulldozed and is a dusty vacant lot. Now, transformed into a little cafe wedged into the Rancho Cotate Shopping Center, the best thing to look at here is the owner, a hot little blonde with bolt-on boobs. The place still serves up high quality short-order grub, including great burgers, tuna melts, hearty breakfasts using quality ingredients and I recently discovered the chicken salad on croissant."
Anybody want to keep searching?
I wish I could remember the name of the place, but there is a used bookstore/ pool hall/ bar in Cotati that I saw Tempest a time or two. Last I was in there (had to be 5-6 years ago now, maybe 7..) they served Barley Wine.
Might be worth checking out... if I had a Cotati phonebook, I'd be able to finger the place in seconds.... but it was right on the main drag.

I just spent some time diddling with MapSource and came up with a dandy-looking route that starts and ends in Cotati and has very few major highways. It's a bit long - close to 300 miles, which on backroads will take ALL DAY. There are numerous bailout opportunities to shorten it.
SW on Pt. Reyes - Petaluma Road Point Reyes Station.
North on 1 to Stewarts Point (slight detour on Meyers Grade nr Ft. Ross)
East on Stewarts Point/Skaggs Springs to Cloverdale
North on 101 to Hopland
East on 175 to Clear Lake
SE on 29 / Morgan Valley / Berryessa Knoxville to Lake Berryessa
West on Sage Canyon to 29 (heart of Napa Valley)
West on Oakville Grade / Dry Creek to Glen Ellen (Sonoma wine country)
Jiggity-jog back to Cotati
Note: I am not married to this ride. Anyone else please feel free to nominate other roads. Just so long as you include Stewarts Point Skaggs Springs road, nobody will get hurt. ;)

Yeah, I was thinking that. I like that one you've got laid out. Want to lead? I'll ride sweep back there on the barge.
I like that loop over into Napa quite a bit. It'd be good to get folks up onto Skaggs while they're still relatively fresh, but have had some time to get warmed up a bit.
Since we've got an out of towner, we'll probably want to stop for photo ops and the like once in a while too. :)

Sure thing. I'm a pretty good rabbit, and my radar detector may come in handy. Except I'm not very good at stopping for anything other than fuel! Must be my Iron Butt nature. But in honor of our Iowa buddy I'll do my best. With a big group, photo opps, and lunch, I think 300 miles is stretching it. Will come up with some alternatives.

If we have any rain, we will probably want to rethink the Berryessa Knoxville Road (http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/BerryessaKnoxville.htm). That can be daunting when the water is up. A good alt could be Chiles Pope Valley Rd (http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/ChilesValley.htm) or maybe past Rumsey on 16 (but that will add miles).

Zowie! :eek Thanks for posting that. The pashnit writeup tells it like it is. It looks great if it's been dry and folks are cool with those stream crossings. We'll have to make the call the day of the ride. Plenty of alternatives exist.

Sweet. If you're looking for some pastry and coffee on Saturday, take a ride down to the Bovine Bakery in Point Reyes Station. It's right on 1. Take D street out of Petaluma and follow it all the way down past the Nicasio Reservoir. Take a right, go over the painted bridge and take a left at the stop sign. The bakery is right in town, right on the right as you come in. Look for the bikes.
