I am having intermittent difficulty downshifting my R1100R. It just hangs up until I "blip" the throttle. This has happened when downshifting from 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears. The bike has 7,000 miles on it and 6,000 mile service two months ago.
Could it possibly be in need of a spline lube at 7,000 miles and 4 years?
The dealer service rep (who I don't have a lot of trust in ) Believes he will have to split the transmission ($1200 plus parts). I'm not ready to spend that kind of muney until I'm certain I have to do so. At present, it is only a minor annoyance but I don't want to do any damage by riding it the way it is.

Any similar experiences out there?

i don't think i've ever downshifted and not blipped the throttle, unless it was like a slam on the brakes situation and then shift into first once you're nearly stopped...............matching revs is a good thing............

What do you mean by 'hanging up', exactly? On my 2000 R11R (15.7k miles) I've managed to push it 'in between' gears (in both cases when downshifting from 5th to 4th I think) twice in the almost 8k miles I put on the bike so far. Is this what you mean? In both my cases it was due to me shifting down extremely gently (as if there was an egg under the pedal so to speak), I still don't know why I do that on occasion :banghead.

The shift lever locks and won't move down without blipping the throttle.
I only used a reasonable amount of force, not wanting to break anything.
It happens intermittently after I engine brake to a low speed, pull in the clutch and try to downshift-After I blip the throttle it breaks free and shifts into the lower gear.

20k miles and it's never happened to me. Only tranny glitch I sometimes have is when I shift into 1st at a light then when the light turns green I'm in N. I think it's my fault. Not enough umpf!

Bummer!
That IS the primary symptom for a transmission input shaft problem. There could also be a problem with the linkage binding. (bent or needing lubrication)
If it's not the linkage, it's highly likely that it's the input shaft. There's been a lot of discussion and pictures of failures on BMW twins over at the BMW Sport Touring forum. Some people have had more than one failure. Since BMW does not specify that this part needs periodic lubrication and since many bikes have accumulated high mileage with no problems, I believe that this problem is related to an alignment problem where the transmission/engine cases do not mate properly due to not being machined properly during the manufacturing process. It this IS your problem, the dealer gave you a good price since BMW refuses to acknowledge that they have a wide-spread problem.

Check freeplay on your clutch lever.
You also should check if you can adjust the gear select lever up, it maybe out of adjustment and is hitting the case or frame.
