I just don't know what to do. Lucky, a collie mix has been my best buddy for almost seventeen years. Yesterday, he could not walk. He vomited and could not move. The vet said that he was dying. I told the vet to euthanize him. I held his head as he died. I hope I made the right decision. He was a great dog..............when my daughter had her sixteenth birthday party, a boy picked her up and was going to toss her into the pool. That is the first time that Lucky ever growled! I guess that I am not looking for support. rather, I am hoping for a support for my friend Lucky.
Yes, you made the right decision. You're the best!
HUGS!

You loved your pet and did what you could to prevent it from sufferring. Unquestionably the right decision. Sorry to hear about your loss.

I am so sorry to hear it, Geoff. I know how sad you are and how empty your home is without Lucky.
I went through a similar experience this past January with my dog Stella. She was under the weather, and we went to the vet in the morning. By noon, her lungs were full of fluid, she could barely breathe and she couldn't be stabilized. I hadn't planned to put my best friend to sleep when I woke up that morning! Going home without her was awful.
You are so fortunate to have shared your life with Lucky for seventeen years! He had a good home, a wonderful quality of life and people to love - he was indeed Lucky.
My thoughts are with you and I am so sorry for your loss.

Geoff, I feel your pain. The pain will subside, and the happy memories will take over in time.

You are a bigger man than I..
I don't think I could have held his head or been in the room, though I do understand why you did.
Condolences.

Geoff,
My condolences to you and your family. I had a cat for 19 years named Orpheus—a great little guy, he was like a dog; responded to commands and was friendly and attentive. But old age and disease got the best of him and I too held his body in my hands as his life slipped away... I understand what you're going through. It will get easier, buddy.
Being right, and doing the right thing does not ease the pain of the loss. Know that you did the right thing for Lucky. We support you as you grieve your loss.

Yes, you did the right thing. As hard as it was, you were there with him at the end. Lucky was a family member, an integral part of your life. Now, he's moved on. You were fortunate to have Lucky for all those years.
I've been there, done that. I held my lab/shepherd mix at the vet as well.
Deep breaths, my friend, as a dog owner/lover, I understand.

geoff - i'm sorry to hear about your loss. it sounds like you did the right thing - you gave lucky 17 good years, and a respectful passing on.
you had those 17 years - cherish them, focus on them, revel in them, and exalt them.
good luck with your grief, all you can do is grind it out in the best way possible for you.

The 'right' decisions are always the 'hard' ones.
My prayers are with you and your family.

I am sorry to hear of your loss. I am an emergency veterinary technician. You did do the right thing. It is tough. Very difficult to say goodbye to members of the family. We don't have to make that decision with people. Only animals. Many people consider their animals as much a family member as their son, daughter, wife, etc. Hard to say goodbye.
17 years old though is 17 years of evidence that you gave that dog a wonderful home. Mix breeds are by far the hardiest over the purebreds and generally have greater longevity, but for a dog that is medium to large in size, 17 years is quite remarkable. Little poodles and stuff sometimes make it that long, but rarely larger dogs.
Congratulations on being a great pet owner. Condolences on your loss of the truest friend a man could ever know.

Geoff - my sincere condolences. I have only had my dogs for a few years, but I would be crushed to lose them. I can't imagine how hard it would be after 17 years. If I have to face a situation such as you did, I hope I am strong enough to do the same thing.

My thoughts are with you Geoff. Having no children, my animals have a special place in my heart, and it it terribly difficult to make that decision. I had a Goldern retriever that I had to put down at 14. It was just like losing a son, and last year One of my cats had kidney failure, and had to be laid to rest.
Here is a poem that may help a bit with your grief. Rainbow bridge (http://rainbowsbridge.com/Poem.htm)

WOW! You guys are great! I can't thank you enough for your support! I guess that its' time to buck up and move on. Greta, the cocker and the kitty cats are kind of mopin' around. Time to pet them up a bit and treats for everyone. Again, THANKS!!

I'm new here, but wanted to add my sympathies. I hope you'll comfort yourself with the knowledge that you gave your companion a great life while here on this earth and you didn't let your friend suffer.
I've been there, it's like loosing a family member.

This will be the hardest decision cause you had to do it for Lucky, not for you. I dread the day I will need to do this.
My sympathies.
