i am going to start a new part of my life shortly. i am going through a divorce and i plan on moving out to santa fe, nm after the dust settles. i will come out with a few bucks in my pocket and they will stretch much further out in the southwest. i've ridden in many parts of the country and i guess i have a soft spot for santa fe. the reason for this thread is: i would like to see if anyone here on the forum can answer all the little questions that i have about the area. i need the truth, either good or bad. i don't want to depend on what a real estate agent tells me (no offense meant to real estate agents, so i don't need any death threats) i plan on getting a teaching job out there. i have a masters in education that i never used, so i figure this would be a good time to make use of it. plus the area has some great riding places either around or close to, so having the summer off sounds really ideal to me. i figure since there is a bmw motorcycle dealership there, there must be some member in this forum that lives in the area. i would appreciate any info i can get either as a post or a private email to me. my email address is bklynpete@aol.com. thanks in advance.

Hey Pete I wish you luck, and that is a pretty part of the country all year round...I have been there many times for fun and business alike. I wish you luck. See ya there in a few weeks maybe? Have to go back on business I think.

Hi Pete,
Santa Fe is a great area, so is Taos. My wifes sister lived in Taos for many years and loved it, they recently sold there house at a serious profit and moved to the mountains of southern CO. We have looked at property in the Las Vegas, NM area and found it to be much less commercial and touristy, also less expensive than SF or Taos.
Right now we are more serious about property further south in the state. I'm wanting to be out of the snow in the winter.
Good luck!

I'm guessing that Santa Fe and Taos are about the most expensive areas in NM. I'd look somewhere in the hills not near a city, if I could. Realtor.com is a fairly decent way to search.
Best of luck to you in this new chapter of your life. :thumb
As another former Fairfeld County resident, I am sure you'll be glad to be rid of all the debutantes and "nose in the air" people there. :clap

i guess one of reasons i want to move to santa fe is the cultural aspects of the town. since i now live in the second most expensive town in ct (greenwich is the first), believe me santa fe is a bargain. taos is another nice area, but having a bmw dealership is a big conveniance. i am looking for a new construction 2 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath adobe house. i did a search and actually found a new developement listing. since i grew up in bklyn, i kinda like living in town.

that's what i hear. i guess that's one of the questions i have, is it really that nice all year round? when it does snow, is it just a nice pretty dusting or do they get heavy duty amounts?

lol, when i first moved to ct from nyc, my friends kidded me about giving up pool for golf. wearing funny color blazers, button down shirts and rep ties. i still have my two piece cue and have not taken up golf. my closet has mostly italian suits, leather and suede blazers and not one rep tie in it. i do have a pair of waspy chinese twins that graduated from columbia and stanford, but that's a good thing. i'm fortunate, most of the people i deal with are down to earth and i will miss them when i move.

I've heard that Las Vegas, NM is now what Sante Fe once was. Kinda like stepping a little back in time. I've never been but hope to some day.
Congrats on getting out of Connecticut. When I retire I'm outta here, too!

Heh. I grew up in CT, and couldn't wait to get out when I was old enough to go to college. I don't hate the place as much now as I did back then (and of course I'm close enough to visit), but I still wouldn't wanna move back.

pete - i've only heard good things about santa fe.
if youre used to the cost of living in connecticut, youre going to think that most everything is being given away in new mexico. you're also going to experience a whole lot more SPACE.
i highly recommend renting a small house for the first year. it'll be an adjustment for you as you put down your new roots. it'll also give you the option to easily consider other places that you're likely to explore from that area, like colorado.
you're going to a good place, congrats on getting out of the northeast. (from a former upstate new yorker who's never looked back. well, except for the food...)

Space, true, but *astronomical* real-estate prices, as well.
Well.... maybe not in comparison to CT.
Last time I was through there, an area that looked interesting to me was called Angels Camp. This is just south of the Ring of Enchantment... so might be a little high in elevation for winter. Not sure.
The riding out there is excellent.

it's all relative Ian. If i wanted to buy a one bedroom condo in my town, we are talking about $500k just as a jump off point. Since I am looking for at least two bedrooms and of course a two car or better garage, then you would have to spend closer to $700k or better for a condo. The average price for a home in new canaan is $1.2 million. Where I work in Greenwich, it is $2 million. So spending around $200k for what i really would like makes me very happy.
Just too answer some of the of the other posts about ct, I don't dislike living here. ct has been berry berry good to me. I moved here for the better school system, the lower taxes (compared to new york) more room for the money and much less traffic. I have the best of both worlds, the better quality of life and being able to run into the city (nyc) like i did this weekend with my bike and enjoy a few street fairs. i feel i will like santa fe and i went from nyc to ct, so getting used to nm should be a piece of cake. i'm ready for a change.

Ouch... now I know where the term "real-estate bubble" comes from! :p
As you look, consider the town/community of Eldorado in NM. It is on Hwy 285 south of I-25 on the way to Lamy and points south. One of our employees lives there. Very nice community with prices that are affordable. Good net access, too, if that's important to you.

it is across the lake from me, about an hour south of Cleveland. I bet you could get quite a few bikes in that shed, the boat across the back is 12 feet long. Amish country out here, and very peaceful.

If it weren't for the winters up that way, I'd be on it!
I'm sure my work could be done in Cleveland and an hour is comparable to the drive I currently face for the frequent business I do in Fort Worth. But damn, those Ohio winters!

Can you have a campout for a couple dozen BMW riders without association approval?

Good luck out in New Mexico, Pete. My folks moved to a pretty little mountain village just north of Albuquerque from--ahem--Brooklyn, back in '90 and lived there till 2001, when the desire to be around grandkids and decent bagels brought them back to the East Coast. But my kid brother stayed out there with his family. They currently live in Albuquerque. Next time I speak to him, I'll be happy to see if he has any advice for you.
