I've been toying with the idea of buying a pair of these for a long time now but a bike drop in the driveway may have just sealed the deal for me today. I was wondering what people's experience is with these?

They adhere with two-sided tape.. can it be expected to hold up for years and years in all types of weather conditions or will the $130/each gems become unexpected roadside decoration when you least expect it?

I know they advertise they don't hinder maintenence, but is that completely true?

I'd like to make an informed decision so please help if you can. Thanks!

For that price you can just by a new valve cover! The plastic OEM thing didn't work when my bike tiped over. So why bother?

I just call my scratches character. The one I did real bad, I think I replaced for about $65. So I agree just replace when needed.

Welcome to the I've dropped my bike in the driveway club. :dance

Did your foot fly-over your head or was it more of a pirouette, and then sitting on the engine, sceaming some explanitive? :ha

Mushman, I looked at those, but bought these instead:

They are also from Wunderlich. I have had a tipover - shortly after mounting them up - on a steep driveway. (Don't ask). Still got a little scratch on the valve cover, though you have to get your nose up to it to see it.

It does skew the look of the bike more toward "touring" and further from "sport", but dang they are functional with a pair of pegs hung on them for those loooong rides. Nor have they seemed to slow me down any :evil

I tell you, at one point today I've had my mind firmly made up to do every option from replacing the valve cover to covering it w/ the accesory I started this thread with... at this point now that I've had all day to stew it over and have touched up the damage with some sandpaper and a bottle of touch-up paint I'm leaning towards leaving it.

It's not so bad that you'll see it at first glance, only if you're staring eye level w/ the cylinder head.

As it was mentioned earlier, I guess it gives the bike that much more character and serves as a lesson for me to always maintain my focus... even when pulling into the garage. At 23,000 miles today, it's not exactly a new machine anymore. I suppose it's entitled to have a scratch here and there.

As for the "how it happened", I got a little lazy on the throttle I suppose when attempting to start uphill on my inclined driveway and immediately turn to angle into the garge. The bike stalled mid-turn which caught me off gaurd and I just wasn't able to hold up the now leaned-over bike which I'd just topped off at the gas station. I set it down, climbed off, and righted the machine...but not before it put its full weight on the right side valve cover (along w/ the mirror and passenger footpeg).

Anyway, I guess we're all allowed one bone-head moment every now and then... at least the Harley-riding neighbors weren't outside to see.

I'd still like to know how well those carbon-fiber jobs hold up if anyone's tried them.

If anyone's curious, here are some pics of the damage after I've worked on it a little... it actually looks better in person.

Scratches! You call those scratches! That is nothing compared to mine, and on both big jugs yet!

Those Wunderlich things are fugly, IMO. I have had one tipover and the BMW plastic guards worked just fine.

Won't you be just as upset about the scratches on those pretty things as you are with the scratches on the valve covers?

If you want burly protection, go with the Stanton guards (http://www.jimmyjib.com/guards.htm). $200+shipping. I want them. I want them. I want them.

I find that if I use the side stand it eliminates the need for those covers...lol

So what, you've got a sidestand on both sides? :ha

HMushman...lol...actually yes I do have a sidestand on both sides to help with this exact problem...and by now of course you have realized I am full of S**t too...hehehehehe. In truth I layed it down while parking over a drop curb so that the stand did not work...hehehehe...the factory guards and the crash bars took it though since I was basically holding the weight going over...lol
