Join us for some damp riding. Camping, redwoods, stupid stories, strong laughter, and the usual relaxed mayhem.

When: October 21st-23rd. Some won't arrive until Saturday night.

Where: Richardson Grove State Park (http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=422) just north of Leggett, CA where 1 and 101 meet.

Lodging: Camping. We can't reserve sites ahead of time, but finding space won't be an issue. $15/night per site. We can easily fit at least two tents per site.

Hotels. There are a few choices.
Best Western Humboldt House Inn (http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/productInfo.do?propertyCode=05421), Garberville - $100 +/- (before the usual discounts)

Brass Rail Inn (http://www.brassrailinn.com/), Redway - $50+

Sherwood Forest Motel (http://www.sherwoodforestmotel.com/), Garberville - $60+

and if you're a fancy fellow or looking for something romantic...
The Benbow Inn (http://www.benbowinn.com/), Garberville - $130 to $375+

Rides: This is a small informal gathering. Pull out the maps and drool. Some of the greatest rides in the country can be found here.

Food: Still debating. Good beverages will be had.

Who's coming?

So who's interested in an October get together up on the Northern CA coast? Camping, riding, story telling, and anything else you can dream up to entertain me (it's always about me). Who's in? When? Where? We want decent roads, good camping, and a place that can tolerate the noise of goofy riders getting together with their internet friends.

I'd vote for Oct 7-9th or the following weekend out on the Lost coast or up around the Redwoods.

I will be in Dayton the weekend of the 7th so now it is about me - how about some other weekend?

So who's interested

I'd vote for Oct 7-9th or the following weekend out on the Lost coast or up around the Redwoods.

That weekend sounds good for 'ME'. The wife says not 'her', bummer, no Thai food.

Scott count me in. But I might not get down there until early Saturday am. So we'll definately have to have a communications plan for link-up.

FM is working well I received a text msg on my cel-phone moments ago to submit for leave during that time frame before this Friday.

Give me some firm dates: 21-23 I'll make it happen. I'd like to meet some of you guys, tip back a few and ride some new roads. (even if I've been on them before)

I would love to join you but SWMBO gonna be in the real land of fungus and mold, Seattle, both those weekends (and the week in between). This probably means I have to take care of the rancho, but I'll see if I can get the niece to look after things...

I will try to bust loose. Where? Patricks Pt? Prarie Creek? Big Basin? Smith River? There are a lot of parks in them thar redwoods.
My favorite is Prarie Creek just north of Orick, the elk wandering around, the isolation, and the groves of truely massive, vertigo inducing trees :bottle (honest, it was the trees!)
The road at Orick through Redwood Creek turns to dirt, transitions from the tallest trees in the world, to a stunted oak woodland, and then grass balds then goes over the coast range to the Hoopa reservation on the lower Klamath. Lots of good stuff there.

Kbasa said I couldnt keep up with you on the bikes no matter what you ride :DWell, of course he's lying, he's just fishing for a compliment on his riding abilities. But I'm not gonna give it to him, he's already got a big enough head, being Prez and all.

And anyway, the /2 has new brake linings on the front and I can brake way later into the turns now! Like, right up to about 50 feet before the turn in.

Anyway, if you want to borrow one of my bikes, you're welcome to it. All of them have saddlebags of some sort, but you'll need your own camping equipment. Just let me know when you're arriving at SJC.

BTW, does Sears even sell ponchos anymore?

Hey Kbasa, you donthappen to have an RRS I could borrow and tag along do ya? I can get out there, just need a bike. (that is unless I would not fit in with you suave california fellers)

The RRS is in bad need of a master cylinder these days, so it's been, well, resting.

As far as the 21st weekend goes, I'll have just arrived home after being gone a solid week. Not sure how that'll play with you know who, so don't wait for me.

Where are you thinking of having it? Or do you need thoughts about where to have it? There's a decent state park just outside Philo that is in a redwood grove and is about 5 or 10 miles inland and out of the fog.

I've been trying to make it to Hwy 36 for 4 years now. I've been every where in California except there.

Posted on the NorCal Sportbike Club Page:

"I think I can say, Hwy 36w might be one of the best sportbike roads anywhere. It has every imaginable type of corner and plenty of them. It begins at valley level and climbs through some of the most beautiful mountains (not that you'll have time to see them), it is 4 hours of road, and it ends at the Pacific Ocean.

This is an "Oh my God, go tell the folks" road.

It is a little late to worry about that

36 has patches of rough pavement but it is pretty sweet. Here is a link to Grizzly Ck SP http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=421
and Prarie Creek SP http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=415
and Patricks point http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=417
Patricks is near 299, Grizzley is on 36 and Prarie is near a gravel road that links to 299 near Hoopa. (I did this dirt road on my Euro Virago back in the day)

I am in for the 21 through the 24. :dance

Yes. I just put it in my date book. I don't know you guys, but if you don't mind me tagging along, I would love to.

I will be riding through there tomorrow on my way to San Fran.
I loooove Hwy 1 between Legget and Sonoma. For camping there's great camping at Big Lagoon, Patricks point and Smith River. Arcata has a little sauna spot, Cafe Mocha, (with hot tubs too) if the weather is nasty and we need to warm up.

If people are heading through my area (Medford/ Ashland) I have living room floor and backyard camping spots.

Just tell me the time and place, thanks for making the arrangements.

Yes, Hwy 36 is a wonderful unpredictable twisty road. Also Hwy 96 between 299 (Willow Creek) and I-5, along the Klammath river, is a must do.

However, Hwy 1 and some of the roads around Yosemite, by Mariposa, are my favorites so far for California.

Smith River hwy 199 is nice upto the Oregon border but then get pretty flat and straight.

Hwy 3? Don't know, never been on that one, 'cept maybe before I-5 was built and I was suckin' my thumb in the back seat.

Hwy 36, haven't been through there in years, I'm game.

Hwy 1 from Hardy to legget was an absolute blast in the 330ci, wouldn't mind doing that section on the GS. :D

I proposed to my wife there :hug (we were on a tour on the R75/5!) The location is on a promontory of black sea cliffs over a roiling ocean. One time (back in the day) the surf was so large there, banging against the rocks, that it registered on the seismigraph at Humboldt State 15 miles away. Great spot.

Scott, if it's raining it's going to be raining everywhere. Lets hope it's not raining. It's only 86-miles apart, just another idea, or one more place to stay.

Question, this is a predominately 'pavement' ride, yes?

As for the rain, that area marks a boundary between the wet NW and the drier CA coast. A little further south is less mountainous and drier.

I have gotten Friday the 21st off.
To continue to throw out options - Leave Portland early and just roll down the Oregon Coast is sweet and easy. A 5 or 6 hour detour would turn left at Gold Beach, then over Bear Paw summit to Grants Pass, the south on 199 to Obrian and over the Syskious to Happy Camp, then 96 to Weaverville and 299 to Eureka and where ever it is we are camping. GS riders could split off and ride Hoopa to Orick and meet at the camp.
Regarding the camp and rain - a campsite right on the coast will almost certianly have damp fog in the AM, where one inland would not. If it rains it will rain everywhere. I, for one, do not see morning mist as a deal breaker.

Bob_M,

That may be a good plan, anybody else think that because of the time of year we should plan on the 'camp' being inland? Trinity Lake is pretty central to some of the roads we're talking about. There were about four camp-grounds that were along the west edge of the lake. I don't know about others, but I'm only going to: :bottle :beer :eat :blah :snore :fart :ha at the campground :dunno In the morning I'm going to: :drink coffee, :hungover :coffee :blah :burnout

How about camping at Indian Scotty? I've camped there in the past, it's well off the beaten track and lies along the Scott River, west of Ft. Jones, CA. Ft. Jones is on CA-3, south of Yreka. It's definitely on the drier side of the world.

There's a paragraph at the bottom of this page from our own site here:
http://www.bmwmoa.org/camping/places/CA.htm

Here's a link to a story on Pashnit.com that includes a photo of camping there (at the bottom of the page): http://www.pashnitforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2211

Looks like we're all over the place; the camping section of About.com has this review, and mentions that the author found it from the MOA site!
http://camping.about.com/od/campgroundreviews/fr/ucpcg726.htm

Here's some info I found on a private web site:
http://www.forestcamping.com/dow/pacficsw/klamcmp.htm#indian%20scotty

(The NFS web site appears to be completely broken. First it didn't respond; then all search queries resulted in an error code. Old links into the site don't work. I guess they just don't want us to come.)

Considering that this is a Redwood Fungal ride, I was wondering if there is an official "funguy" :twirl (fungi).?
I imagine I will recognize the big mushroom helmet. :dunno

I might be willing to be assistant ,to the assistant fungal after a :drink at the campsite. :)

Back to Route and campsite. From what I have read there will be a Bay Area contingent (not Coos Bay) and a Pacific NW group. Most of the riders will depart on Saturday, early. That means that a campsite roughly equidistant to both groups make sense. There are lots of those previously mentioned in this thread. If one is taking interesting roads the Russian Gulch is pretty far from South Sound, or Portland for a one day ride.
The weather on the coast may be specatularly beautiful. (the other options have already been mentioned). The morning mists are often a summer phenomonom where the heat inland draws cool, moisture laden air onshore. Autumn may be dry and clear. I say expect the best and prepare for the worst.
Is Sunday a ride day or departure day?

Most important I'm bringing Irish Whiskey. :dance

At this point, I vote for Richardson Grove SP (http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=422). It isn't a hidden hideaway, but it's fairly central for those coming, offers good access to amazing roads, is amongst the redwoods, isn't so close to the coast that we'll freeze or so close to Oregon that we'll drown. It's located between Leggett to the south and Garberville to the north. The parks brochure (pdf) can be found here (http://www.humboldtredwoods.org/images/richardsongrove.pdf).

I'll give them a call tomorrow.

I think it's Burnzilla, Dick, Darryl, Ian and Lorazepam +1 from the South Bay.

It's about a 5+ hour haul from SJC. I'm guess at COD departure would get

Cardinal Zin...yumm... it runs arond $17 or so at Trader Joe's up here. Nummy nummy.

Stores? There's a Ray's up in Redway and Garberville (10 or so miles to the north). It might be easier for us to pick stuff up on the way. If you're coming up 101, there's a Safeway and a Ray's in Willits and a Foster's Market in Laytonville. Coming up 1, Fort Bragg is probably the closest.

Will any of those places have anything beyond the bare basics? dunno.

Don't worry. We'll take good care of ya.

We'll stop any time we change roads, so you won't get lost. Usually, rides like this tend to split into little groups once we're on the back roads, so I fully expect to stop and regroup periodically.

Are we going to cook at the camp? Or are we going to find a restaraunt around there somewhere? I think it's getting dark at 7pm or so these days.

Sorry not to have participated the last couple days, I've been out of town with me wife celebrating our anniversary. (BTW, the baths at Vichy Springs outside of Ukiah are pretty nice, and it turns out there's a good Thai restaurant in town!)

Alright, Loraz and I will leave SCruz early Saturday. Burnszilla, are we meeting along the way? I can get us up into your neck of the woods. Then we take 280 to 'Frisco (spoken like a native Angelino should!) and over the bridge up to KBasa's place. It's about 2.5 or 2.75 hours to there; just timed it while driving to and from Ukiah ;-).

What's the sense of going to the redwoods if we don't get to ride the stretch of CA-1 up to Leggett? Go up 101 and then take either CA-128 from Cloverdale through Boonville, or CA-20 from Willits out to the coast. Both are fine rides, though I think we'd find a bit less traffic on 20.

Cooking: I'm easy. I like to camp and cooking simple stuff is fun. But if there's a ride to a restaurant, I'm in for that.

In regards to food prep. My preference is to eat out. If we are camping for sure, I will bring my backpacking stove (little pocket rocket) and if needed my whisperlite too. But these are only for heating water for warm drinks and coffee in the AM for all those unwilling to move more than 5 feet prior to coffee. A couple of things:

1) Are we decided on where and when we are meeting up? Where we are camping?

2) Basic wuss check... If it's pouring rain in the forcast, are we still planning to camp? Ride all day in the rain and camp in the rain?
-Just checking. I plan to sleep in my bivi, which is just big enough for my sleeping bag, so there's no "drying room". I'm OK with that, but I don't want to pack all of my camping gear unless....we are camping. So if most people would rather do the motel thing if the forcast is... rain, rain, rain, then I would like to know in advance. I'm OK with that too, it means a much lighter bike for me.
Thanks,
KY

Even that is a long ride. I would be delighted to be part of the northern contingent and would gladly change my plans to accomodate. I'll call Tom (now single) to see if he cares how many scurvy dogs (middle aged men) crash on his floor.

You know that term in my hip lingo tranlation guide has a salacious interpretation.
Anyway, Russ if you leave South Sound WA on Friday AM that could get you in Portland mid morning. I don't know when Scott is leaving, but if we rode down together there are plenty of campsites on the (Oregon & Calif) coast for a layover. I see no urgency to run through the dark of night to arrive at the R. Grove at midnight on Friday, and neither do I want to scorch down the slab and miss so many nice roads, when most of the folks are arriving on Saturday. If it looks wet on the coast, 97 through Klamath falls and to a swell little campsite just north of Lassen Nat'nl Park. The ride through Lassen is very nice. then we could cut west on 36.
Just a thought.

Let's not hook-up that way :buds , I don't know yet what time I will get done with work on Thursday, but that has little to do with when I leave Friday. I could be on the road before the sun starts (wait this is almost winter the sun won't be up for a while :laugh ). I was thinking (if dry) to slab it down to Eugene and take 126 over to Florence and head down 101 until I got tired or got there. Monday, I'm more apt take 96 or 3 North and then put my head down on I-5. While down there I'd like to loop 36 and 299 in some rotation.

I guess my question for Scott is this: "Is the main idea of this operation to have us all arrive at Richardson SP early Saturday and head off for a big ride and return or, are we all getting there when we get there to laugh about getting there and talk stories :beer around the camp-fire then break up in morning (Sunday) for returns to home?"

I can be there Friday PM, Saturday AM or mid-day, :dunno I'm definitely spending all day Sunday riding the area and may camp somewhere else that night. Then head home Monday (all day).

If I don’t need to be at Richardson SP until Saturday night, well I can get lost all the way down there for two-whole days…Never see I-5… :thumb

I’ve spent so much time on Hwy 97 :banghead that I’d rather ride in the rain along the coast.

Here's me, weekend before last, on this crazy road behind Garberville. The name is Alderpoint. It was very curvy, bumpy and well, kindof strange.

Honu

OK, so this road goes from Garberville to hwy 36. I personally thought it was curvy enough, but apparently someone in a car did not. All along the road there are tight marks from the tires of a car. Some of them look as though the person was really out of their mind. The marks are every 50 to 100 yards apart and they go on for miles. (Some kid havin fun I guess). The road might be worth checking out if we have the time. It doesn't take long to get to the top (where the picture in my previous post was taken.)

Honu, the Alderpoint Rd. out to Bridgeville on CA-36 is, indeed, a lot of fun. But if you have more time and want more curves... after Alderpoint, there's a turn off on the road to Zenia and Ruth Lake. Most of this is newly paved, and some of it is just getting paved. It comes out on CA-36 a bit further east, at Mad River. You can jog over to FS-1, which runs for 50 miles or so to CA-299, just east of the CA-96 junction. This road is not as bumpy as Alderpoint Rd., but you have to watch out for the wildlife. Last time I had to avoid deer and persuade a steer that the grazing might be better a bit further from the road.

If any of you have the chance, look for a program called "California's Gold" on PBS.

There was a show on Patrick's Point and Agate Beach the other day (TiVo Rulez!).

Huell Howser is a real hoot. He takes his camera guy and they go all over the state
then hack something together for a 30 minute show. He goes to some pretty cool
places but this definitely doesn't have high production quality but that's what makes
California's Gold a fun show to watch.

Heull killed too many brain cells in the sixties - that show is cool but it can be painful watching Heull try to interview folks...

SO is this the light switch for the light house?
Let me guess this is the light bulb?
These must be the stairs to the top?

he does go to places that are cool and either him or his staff does enough research to make it interesting but production is rough at best.

Two questions:

First: I guess my question for Scott is this: "Is the main idea of this operation to have us all arrive at Richardson SP early Saturday and head off for a big ride (Lost Coast :thumb ) and return or, are we all getting there when we get there to laugh about getting there and talk stories around the camp-fire then break up in morning (Sunday-Monday) for returns to home?"

Second: I use a ChatterBox GMRS radio from time to time, is there anyone else interested in having bike-to-bike communications? (Besides the helmet mounted one I have a hand-held radio too) :dunno

Some folks might get down there on Friday, in which case I'd suspect some kind of group ride will happen.

Some of us (me included) will get there on Saturday night, try to destroy a bunch of brain cells and then struggle toward conciousness on Sunday to ride home.

I don't have an answer to that question. :lol

I just try to point people in the right direction and let things sort themselves out. As for a group ride, that's going to mostly depend on when people get there. I'm aiming for Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.

I should add that we could meet you at the Arastredero Park and Ride.I don't see any problem with that. I anticipated taking I-280 simply because it's the fastest route. I think we also should take the double super secret route along the Great Highway to avoid slogging up 19th Ave. in SF.

Timing... Loraz and I will have to get on the road reasonably early, maybe 7 or 7:30, to get us up to KBasa's around 10. I would think we'd go by the Arastradero P&R around 8:00, depending on exactly when we get going.

Alderpoint takes a long time to ride (maybe 2 hrs) because of rough road and unmarked unpredictable twists. It may be better to ride north to the beginning of 36, that would be a smoother ride and likely quicker. If you want to go up 3 all the way, there are some unpaved sections that are do-able, but not too much fun. If it's dusk by then, there are the suisidal deer that tend to hang out in the less traveled portions of 3. 299 is more traveled, but there are some damn fun twisties all the way back to I-5 from where 3 meets 299. It is a real pleasure, with less gravel and less mentally unstable wildlife. :thumb I'm all for the road less traveled, but I will need to get home at a more reasonable hour.

This is from the Richardson SP online brochure:

Camping
Richardson Grove has 170 family campsites in
three campgrounds. Each site has a fire ring,
picnic table and food locker, with restrooms
and hot showers nearby. Sites can
accommodate trailers up to 24 feet and
motor homes up to 30 feet, and one site is
reserved for hikers and cyclists. Oak Flat
Campground, on the east side of the river
among oaks and open, grassy meadows, is
only open during the summer since access is
via a low-water, seasonal bridge. The yearround
group camp, along the river among
giant redwoods, can accommodate up to 40
people and 11 cars and has accessible
restrooms.

Well, I was just rambling on the phone with ibuzzard, and that got me to looking for the the Richardson Grove State Park information on the web. There's also a pdf of the brochure the state hands out (http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/422/files/richardsongrove.pdf) available there, on the last page of which it shows a map.

There are three camping areas in the park: Huckleberry and Madrone camping areas on the west side of US-101, and Oak Flat on the east side. As I recall, the west side of the highway goes up a hill and has a pretty dense growth of redwoods. The east side goes down and across the Eel River.

The Oak Flat campground is across the river to the east from the highway, and looks like it would be best if you wanted to go into the river. The other two campgrounds look like they're about 100 ft above the highway, to the west.

Do we want to try to aim for one of these camp areas in particular, so we don't get too spread out? All see to have restrooms and showers.

If I were choosing, I'd want to pick the one farthest from the highway noise.

Oak Flat is closed (open mid Jun - mid Sep)

I'm guessing they are going to want us to use the group campground anyhow.

First rider in asks the Ranger/Camp Host then picks the best location for all us Hooligans.

What about 15-25 bikes and riders?

I have my tent and sleeping bag/pad packed with my riding gear. Guess I will carry on my helmet and clothes, along with the trail bologna and the wheel of cheese.
Leaving the cook kit and stove at home, since they dont like propane on planes anymore. I am sure I will forget something, and I will be asking for it when I get there.

Darryl, I will be bringing my bag liners for the RRS, to make it easy to pack my clothes in the bags, though I guess I really just need stuff for overnight saturday night.

I've been riding the R1150RS around the last couple weeks, thought I'd give the R90S a warm up on Sunday. I keep it plugged into the Battery Tender, and the light was green, but when I hit the button, klackety-klackety-klackety. The battery is only 3 years old, which is pretty unusual situation for me, I'm used to getting at least double that. Oh well, I'll get a new one today.

Things are good. New, sealed Panasonic battery, and it's happy again. Ran around some errands today just to make sure.

If all else fails, there's still the /2, since it did make a 1400 mile trip 2 weeks ago to Death Valley (http://darryl.crafty-fox.com/mcpics/2005/slash2Camping) with no complaint.

A client (not this place) is requiring me to do some work tomorrow. I'll see you all on Saturday. I'll head out tomorrow ASAP and camp somewhere on the way and do my best to get to the grove as early as I can manage on Saturday. Or maybe I'll just bang out the 500 miles and get in late. I'll have coffee on. I think we've got Loraz, Darryl, Dick, ian, Carrie, Tina and I leaving from our place. Rob was going to come out, but is hung up dealing with a ship in Houston instead.

I think we'll head up 101 to 128 and stop in Cloverdale for gas. From there, we'll head north up 1 to Leggett, where we'll rejoin 101 to Avenue of the Giants.

I've gotta go to Bevmo today...
