Does anyone know for sure what the correct fuel capacity is on the new 1200RT? The owner's manual says 7.1 gal and the BMW brochoure says 5.5 gal. Also a review in a motorcycle magazine stated 7.1 gal. Does anyone have a conclusive answer? Thanks in advance.

It's 7.1 (or thereabouts). What brochure says 5.5?

It was a brochure from BMW that was mailed to me listing all of their bikes with specification on all models. I also saw the same thing at the dealership and sure enough it was listed at 5.5 gal. I talked to the service manager and he wasn't sure. I just checked my owner's manual and it listed 7.1. I guess a call to BMW is in order to get the Final Answer. Thanks for the reply.

No, you already have the final answer. I measured it myself.

It's 7 gallons on mine.
The gas guage is a little wierd though. I've run it down to zero on the miles left indicator and still put 6 gallons in.

I've put 7.1 gal in mine, with the little rubber thing removed. And averaging 50mpg it's GREAT!!! :german

That little rubber thingy in the filler neck is a pain in the neck! How did you remove it. I am constantly trying to "milk" in enough gas to get a completly full tank. This was not one of BMW's better ideas.

Just like picking your nose. Put your finger in it and pull. Comes right out. Then wipe your finger off. :D

mine too, i guess it's better then saying empty and hearing a sputtering sound....
Is the gague measuring the capacity less reserve?

I’m not sure what BMW had in mind when they designed that fuel gauge. My light comes on when the gauge hits the lower countdown bar. When I run it down to no bars showing at all, I can only put 6 gallons in, leaving me with another gallon. I guess this is a double reserve. The light comming on that early is about the only annoying thing on the RT so far. :D

i found the same and it first annoyed me too. but then i thought i'd rather see blinking icons and a yellow light and know that i can do 300 miles or more and still have fuel left. i think bmw knows it is not a good thing to run a fuel injected bike completely empty and since we have all run the bike down to zero miles left, maybe it's a good thing they give us an extra reserve. :dunno

I was just at the dealership yesterday looking at that very bike. I remember distinctly that it said 5.5 gallons, with 1 gallon reserve.. so could that be why the confusion?

These are the spec's I've read just about everywhere. :dunno
BMW’s latest take on mach schnell long-distance travel inherits a massaged version of the 1170cc boxer and Evo-Paralever driveline introduced on the ’04 GS. Listed at a claimed 110 bhp, the engine is some 12 horsepower stronger than an ’04 R1150RT’s. And at 571 pounds—with its 7.1-gallon fuel tank full but without saddlebags—it’s 44 pounds lighter. BMW credits the added muscle to revamped intake and exhaust plumbing, warmer cam timing and 12.0:1 compression (up from 11.3:1 for the ’04 RT’s 1130cc boxer). Said power flows through a GS-spec six-speed gearbox, though primary- and final-drive cogs are new.
Also I have personally put that in mine. :D
