How does one remove the mirrors from the 11XXRT? How are the mirrors held on? Any warnings? Am I likely to damage the mirror housing or fairing?

Thanks! :)

peterh -

The mirrors are made to pop off in the event they hit something, like the side of a car you are passing. They are held on with three little metal pins attached to the bike that fit in to three sets of spring-tensioned metal receivers - kind of hard to describe but you'll see. Now - when the mirrors pop off they will still be connected to the bike by the turn signal electrical wires, so CATCH THEM before they break those wires, unplug the connectors on the wires, and then carefully place your mirrors on the ground.

The removal technique that works for me is to stand next to your fairing and take the palm of one hand and whack the snot out of the "front" or plastic side of the mirror assembly (you are simulating knocking it off in traffic). Have your other hand ready to catch it as it flies off heading backwards, disconnect the electrical wires, and voila!

Note of caution - if you are going to have the electrical system on while the mirrors are off, tape over the electrical connectors at the end of the turn signal wires so that your flasher unit does not short out - DAMHIK!!!

Ride safe,

Peter,
What works for me on both my K1100 and my R1100RT is to wrap a towel around the mirror and then whack it from the rear at the extreme outer edge. Comes off very easy and the towel protects it if the turn signal sockets disconnects. Otherwise, you do need to catch it to prevent tearing the wires out of the sockets.

You'll have to wack them HARD, you'll swear you are going to break something. Don't let it scare you. Once you git er done you will see what holds them in there.

While you have them off, go to the sporting goods store and buy some wire leaders you can attach as safety devices, in case the mirror is knocked off while you are riding. I am guessing that anything of 20 pound test or greater would work fine, and cost way less than the ones made specifically for this purpose, and are almost exactly the same.

Thanks, everyone! The mirrors came off and went back on just as you described.
