is there anyway to determine if my oilhead is equiped with the standard 600W alternator or the "special equipment" higher output 700W one. i'm sorta wondering cause whoever owned it before me paid to have the optional wider tire put on it, and i figure someone would would buy what was an over priced bike when introduced and then pay to have a 600 dollar rim put on it and then only ride it 3500 miles in 5 years might have opted for the bigger alternator..............

The standard alternator for your R1100S is 700 watt. The high output alternator is 840 watt.

i got the info from the official press release:

http://www.dropbears.com/m/models/bmw/r11s99.htm

also, i suppose i could just take the tank off and look at the sticker, but i'm trying to avoid that, cause at this point, its nothing more than curiosity, i don't plan on running heated earmuffs and 32 sets of PIAA lights any time soon..........

It appears that you're right. You may have to at least remove the tank to look at the label. If it says 50A than it is the 700 watt alternator. 50A X 14V = 700W. I picked up a 700 watt off of E-Bay for about $50 a few months ago. I thought it would be a good idea to have a spare around.
