View Full Version : Crashbar Testing

I conducted an unscientific test of my BMW-Adventure(OEM) (added after-market to a standard GSA) crash bars during an unwanted tire test on wet grass while chasing deer off my property in the rain. (I was just returning from work, so no, I didn’t plan to do this on the Beemer)
Everything worked as I had hoped and it looks like there was no discernable damage to anything other than my right Jesse bag popping off and up into my BestRest cargo rack (which had a 35lb suitcase strapped to it) causing some minor bending of the rack and some minor scratching of the bag. Funny thing was (as I went over the bars and front end, I didn’t hit anything but the ground) both my mirrors rotated forward and were loose after the fall, kinda weird.
I tore up about ten-feet of grass and dirt, I don’t remember ever using the brakes, I just let off the throttle on an off chamber section and down she went. This is number three so I hope I’m done dropping this bike, but what the hell, that’s what motorcycles do if you ride them long enough. I’d guess I was gong at lest ten-mph.
Far as I’m concerned they just paid for themselves. :thumb
EDIT:
I do not recommend chasing deer on wet grass with a RT or like bike.

Just think, add a scientist or two with some video cameras and you could sell it to Real TV or Maximum Exposure. You could be famous. Glad you weren't hurt. Damn Gravity.

Bambi! To the thicket! To the thicket! SFDOC is in the forest!
Never mind Bambi, he must be part deer too! Look at him eating long strips of grass! :D

P.S. on further inspection and (repair)
The Touratech Frame saver did exactly what it's suppossed to do. The small rubber bumper is gone, smashed gone, everything looks good and there is no damage to forks or frame-stop. From what I've heard this was the kind of slow speed fall that breaks frames, so yeah, it was worth the $-hundred bucks, if you don't have one yet.
I took the BESTREST shelf off this am and hammered back straight. Everything else is just "Remember when you did something stupid, idiot" memory/character marks. :doh
Oh, what color mullet am I s'posed to have? :dunno

hehehehe...thanks doc...too bad no meet this time although maybe another day. Rain or shine it is fun as long as there is no lightning close by. I am thinking of taking I90 back to I94 then up to US2 all the way to MI...should be scenic. I took US2 from Glacier Natl Park to Tonasket, WA on our trip and it was an awesome road...

Guys, I think I might have been going faster than TEN, and I think I know why the mirror brackets moved, "Centrifugal force".
Today my back [muscles] is killing me.
The front end washed out pretty fast, what a dumb thing to do, what a stupid lesson to learn. I should have already known; it’s the same thing that happened in the snow two-years ago, wham, bam, picking myself up.
I should have parked in the garage and ran after ‘bambi x three’, on foot. It’s just that these big ‘F-ing’ rats have destroyed $300 worth of fruit trees and are constantly eating my wife’s roses this summer. I came home in the rain, and gave chase, wasn’t even thinking of going down, I ride in my yard all the time, just for fun…

Maybe a big mean dog would do the trick, or maybe tin cans hung from string on the plants to rattle when the deer graze. would take away from the aesthetics though.

Good idea but, too much pain. This was my boy until last February (long sad story, but he wandered off and never; I found him on the side of the road and buried him) my wife and I can't bring ourselves to go through that again yet.

Belquar, no bad feelings against you, you couldn't have known. I miss him every day, and wish he was still with us, he was family; six-weeks to three years and one month and going through a difficult time, but that's personal. I was home and it was a regular morning, he just needed to explore. (I live 1/4 mile off the nearest main road and its supposed to be 45-mph, he got hit a 1/2 mile from home) I blame myself.
Maybe I'll try the shell-casings in the C-rat cans, for early warning.
I'd like to kill them, but I have some neighbors that might object. (I object to killing for no good reason, but eating them, that's good enough for me) I know two that would help but the rest I'm not sure about. This herd of about eight has wrought hell on this country hamlet for four-years now. Dept of Fish and Wildlife says I need a hunting permit to take only one, each year. I guess they don’t have deer eating their plants and trees at home in the city. Some things are just not worth going to jail over.
So the best I can do is chase them back into the woods and spay my trees with this god-awful smelling repellent every two weeks.

So sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is tough. I work as an emergency vet tech and unfortunately have to be there for the loss of many family members. Loss never feels good but you hold onto the good times. In time your heart will heal and you will be ready for a new furball of energy. They are such a great addition to a home. Being showered with unconditional love every time tou walk through the door is great.
Give it time when you are ready it will be right. Just remember you aren't replacing your friend, just making a new one.
Take care,
Brian
