Where is the Talimena scenic drive at?
It runs from Mena, Arkansas (about 70 miles south of Fort Smith) westerly into Oklahoma near Talihina, OK. (Tali-Mena). It is a very scenic drive along the ridge of the beautiful Ouchita Mountains. There is an Arkansas State Park (Queen Wilhelmina SP) partway along the drive with a Lodge and camping. An excellent motorcycling destination- especially spring and fall. I thought that the roads and ridge running available here in east central Ohio would be comparable to western North Carolina. Having finally made the trip to the Dragon, I now know what twistees are about. Not to mention the Smokie Mountain Parkway (super highspeed cruise) or so I have been told!
It would be like comparing Laguna Seca with the road course at Daytona, they are both wonderful places but very different circuits.
The decals on the bags are from Tapeworks.com, it is the logo of The Army of Darkness, WERA race team from the DC area. Sam Fleming is the leader of that group and several years ago I asked him for permission to use his logos, He said yes as you can see. The guy is so coll that his girl friend is a BMW certified mechanic and at one time owned a K-RS himself!

Sweet! I've been itching to ride up there again.....it's really nice in the morning, especially on a weekday when there's no traffic. I've never seen you riding in town or anything, but it seems like I have been seeing alot of older BMW bikes on the road lately. I think it's kinda neat that the K75 and K100 are starting to become popular again. Several people have asked me where they should go to find one. I've got no complaints. I've almost completed my first year of riding and have put 9000 miles on the bike, it runs like a champ. I'm considering a ride to Texas in October to visit family. It's kinda a wash at this point because if I ride my bike, I don't think I could go close to 1000 miles in one day, especially if the weather gets bad. So I'd need to get a hotel in route, both going and coming home, which is money I could use for gas in my car and drive straight through.....

Sweeeet! That color combo (red/yellow) is the first K1 I ever saw... at a rally in Oregon back in 1992, I think it was, and I've wanted a K1 ever since. Finally got mine (the blue/silver one posted earlier in this thread) and it's everything I thought it would be--and more! I like your two tone paint job. Would it be possible to see a picture of it from the front, slightly off angle that would show the front and the side in the same image? Did you leave the paniers black?
It will be a year or two before my '87 K100RT needs a paint job but I am interested in other possiblities rather than simply going back to black.

Paul,
Thanks! Thats the same thought I had, I wanted black but put the silver on to break up the big RT fairing. I just left my bags black but you could paint them silver and that might look nice. Heres another pic, if you want more I can send em to you. Also some of the later (90's) K1100Lt's had a similar paint job with the black and silver switched around.

Well done.
Some questions:
1. Does the GT windshield bolt right up, or do you have to do some modifications?
2. Are the wind guards BMW items or aftermarket? Any installation difficulties?
3. How did you match up the tank guard colour to your paint?
Thanks.
Rinty

Yes, the GT windscreen uses the same mounting points as the low screen. The handgards are from the GT. You may have to get them already painted and then have them repainted to match your bike. Bagster makes tank protectors and tank bags for several bikes, just so happened they had the sky blue tank protector that matched pretty well! The RS wiring harness is not set up for the GT heated seat, so a seperate wiring harness had to be made to operate the seat. In addition I purchased a new handlebar switch to integrate the heated seat. I don't like the look of the leg protectors on the GT fairing so I left those off. The stock GT handlebars were not at all comfortable so I left the RS handlebars in place ( for me a perfect set up) Basically I have the sportiness of the RS and the touring comforts of the GT

Here is a pic of Old Grey. She is a '88 K100RT that I bought in '91 for $3500. We rode together for 12 years and over 120K miles. Ol Grey would take anything I threw at her and just keep running. Even when I decided to sell her she took care of me. I sold her in '03 for $3450. It was the best $50 I will ever spend. Heres to happy times Ol Grey- Wherever you are!

Thanks for the feedback. My thinking was that it's easier to find a good, low mileage K 12 RS, than a GT, and your conversion has the benefit of retaining the better, forward weighted, riding position. The lower wind deflectors are not really necessary, because keeping legs dry and warm is a lot easier than doing the same for hands, and the bike ends up with a cleaner overall look.
Again, congratulations on a really well thought out project.

The trailer is a Uni-Go. The handling of the trailer is fantastic. There are issues with it though. I talked to about a dozen different owners and came to the conclusion that the build quality is not uniform between trailers. Some had multiple problems will others where trouble free. Mine was not trouble free and after I lost confidence in it I went to a Bushtec trailer. The Uni-Go was and is a great concept that just needs a better quality control system. I bought mine about 4 years ago so maybe this has been addressed by now?

I didn't know the Uni-go was now produced in the USA. Where at? That should definately cut down on the aggravation of needing a part and not getting any response from Uni-Go in New Zealand. Hopefully they are now produced with a hardened bolt for an axle instead of the low grade piece of crap that mine kept breaking.

Ohio. They lots of experience with this trailer. As well. they have strengthened some areas of the trailer that could use it. That bolt issue is obviously a serious matter which we have not yet heard of. I would say that quality control, customer satisfaction and access to parts is a major focus for the new manufacturer. BTW did you have any other concerns re: trailer? PM if you like. We are looking into providing a small forum on our website for any Uni-go related discussion (like your's for instance). -Bob

Greg,
Typical interstate highway weave section where the entry point is just before the exit point. People handle them successfully a million times a day - literally. Not this time! I was pulling onto the interstate. She - in the minivan - was originally in the left lane. At the last minute she headed into my lane - probably for the exit. I don't think she saw me. I barely saw her. The van struck the front forks / handle bars which tore them off the bike. They were mostly found in the fence 190 feet down the road. The van tore the radiator off the front of the engine but missed the block. Everything came off the bike: front end, tank, saddle, trunk, bags. So what was left was a mainframe bent at the steering head, with a 370,000 mile engine, transmission, and drive train attached. Our speed differential was probably 30 to 35 mph.
The front end absorbed a lot of energy coming off and apart. The bike flopped down right hard - it may have tumbled. I flopped of to the right - hard. Landed with my bony elbow tucked in to my rib cage - the elbow lined up perfectly with one broken rib. Then I bounced at least once and wound up standing up.
I looked down and said out loud, "Sh&#, I don't think I can fix it this time."
I saw that the few oncoming cars were getting stopped. There was stuff from the bike scattered all over both lanes. The big pieces were in the right lane, so I moved the little stuff out of the left lane, and was standing there in my black bib-topped Aerostich pants and a blue shirt directing traffic when the Sheriff, Highway Patrol, fire truck, and ambulance arrived.
I took the ambulance ride to get checked out. I told them I thought I had broken a rib. Sure enough!
My helmet, boots, and Aerostich suit were none the worse for wear except a little dirt on the suit. I had that broken rib, a big bruise on my right thigh and a big bruise on my left hip. Oh, and a little scratch on my cheek from my glasses frame.
I was very very lucky. A few inches different and she would have hit the block. There would have been much less energy absorption from stuff bending/breaking and a much more violent hit. A bit further back than that and she would have been into my leg.
So we had to scrub our 49 State ride at 40 states. Rented a car to drive me home. Hauled all the "stuff" that was in the bike for a 49 State ride in what was left of two saddlebags and my big Harley trunk. Left Voni's bike and went back to get it two weeks later.
I toyed with buying the whole thing from the insurance co. - but they wouldn't let me cherry pick the hulk. It was all or nothing. And the storage charges were going to be mine if I kept it. And I wasn't feeling too spiffy right then anyway and didn't feel like a long trip with a trailer. So I turned my back and walked away from it.
19 years - 370,000 miles I owned that bike. Hated to see it die! But it was running good till the last split second.

That's the thing I don't like about getting a new bike. Takes time and work to get the stuff on it. I bought a new KS the other day and it even needs a center stand. I hated having to do that last year, cut the belly pan (perfectly) to put on a center stand, put an outlet right off the battery, install a BMW blinky led brake lite, RAM ball for the GPS, tankbag mounting hardware, bag mounting hardware, etc.
I don't add extra wire easily these days. I am thinking of FRS radios, Viki wants to let me know when I do something dopey before she forgets about it when we stop later. I'm sort of waiting for Bluetooth preinstalled in helmets or something. Wireless...heh.

Wow. I rember talking with you at Branson last year about your 49 State ride. Too bad to loose such a good horse, but it seems the horse did a lot to protect you under the circumstances.
I had something somewhat similar happen in December. Riding to work crossing a very long, curved, 3-lane freeway overpass in the center lane. As I got onto the bridge I realized it was very icy. Just then, an old Toyota comes up in the right lane already going sideways. She crosses right in front of me (like less than five feet), passing to my left through my lane and into the far left lane. Not content to stay there, back she comes from my left, this time tagging the K75 just at the front edge of the cam & timing chain cover. It was *really* slick, so the bike goes down to the right, I bounce off her front fender (breaking two ribs) and over the hood to slide down the pavement following the K75. Much like you, other than the broken ribs and some bruses, I was fine. My gear was fine (ATGATT!) other than some good skuff marks on the helmet.
I did get the bike back from the ins. company (they have been very fair) and will have it back on the road this spring once I get the new Pichler painted. Makes for an exciting day when something like this happens, don't it? :laugh

I bought this bike last May, and hit a deer with it in November. Three weeks ago I got the damaged bits back from my paint guy, and as you can see my K is back in one piece.

The sticks are so securely bungied that it would be easier for me to unzip the bag and fling a skate at someone. It does seem to deter tailgaters, however.

My Krauser fairing is made from Unobtainium, so I had to have it completely reglassed to make it useable. Then, since I was having it painted, I decided it was pretty cheap (incrementally) to add a custom graphic.
I'm pretty pleased with it, and the shop did a show-quality finish on it, but I will continue to ride this bike, and just let the paint suffer. The fairing does make the rest of the paint look shabby though.
I had to take this picture while it still looked pretty.

Hey, seeing all these K1 bikes (and probably the K100LTs also) makes me ask a question:
On my K100, how much can I wisely block off the heat behind the fairing and in front of my legs without causing problems? The K1 pictures make it look like the fairing is well sealed to the tank and engine, so that would sure take some heat off me.

I have a K1 and have owned a K100RT so know something about HEAT. ;) The heat transfer on the K1 is much different from the K100RT in that your legs and upper body do not get cooked, but there is a lot of heat that comes from down low across you feet and lower legs. At highway speeds it's not too bad, but around town it builds up and then really gets your attention when you get on the open road until the heat "trapped" under the fairing gets a chance to purge. My take on this is you shouldn't do a lot of low speed running with the K1 because it seems to collect more heat under the body work than seems like a good idea.
On the K100RT the heat would come up from just below the tank and get sucked up past my legs and onto my torso because of the negative pressure behind the fairing. On a hot day it was an oven. I got a set of Kguard Heat Shields which helped quite a bit. They fill in the gap just behind the fairing lowers and force the heat to pass behind them and exit behind your legs. You still don't get a lot of fresh air due to the size of the fairing, but at least the convection oven effect is greatly reduced. ;) The web site for the company that makes these is still there, but it's marked that they are closed for business right now: http://hometown.aol.com/bmwkguard/ You might also find some for sale by searching the lists.

New member here. Joined last night in a drunken stupor. I've owned my K1100 for 3 years I, I think, and have been a member of K11OG for about that long. Notice some familiar names on this site. I don't know why it took me so long to join because I knew about it and have read the magazine a couple of times and really enjoyed it. Anyway, if you're in north Idaho, give a shout out if you need anything. And since this is a pic thread, here it is, loaded for the return trip from Jasper, AB.

That is one nice looking k75s. How many miles on it? I have owned my 1992 k75s for 6 years now and am convinced they are the best bike ever built by anyone. There are many bikes that will do things better- better for 2 up riding, faster but at the expense of vibration and gas mileage, better looking but probably not as reliable.
