Is there a normal life (miles to failure) for the speedo cable on the oilhead RT's? I know they do fail at some point, but is there a preventive maintenance replacement time? I'd be interested to hear when yours failed or how long you've gone so far without a failure.

Almost 80K on my '96 Roadster and no problems. Has your cable failed on your RT?

I'm at 38K with no problems so far. I'm trying to see if there is a point where I'm on borrowed time and need to replace the cable in the comfort of my garage.

my '01 1150GS broke at 38K - cost $15 to replace and 30-40 mintues on the GS.
I never did any PM to it before it broke, but I think you can drop a drop of 3n1 oil down the cable. Mine broke about 12" down from the top, I noticed a distinct 'kink' or 'bend' right at the point where it broke. Must've been how my handle bars rest or something?

Started to experience some odditity in a wierd waving of the needle at about 85k on a 02 1150GS... my local tech though that the cable was about to go... at 96K now and still no real problems.. it is a part that will go when it goes... i ride hard in extreme weather and landscape conditions...

Broke at 19K on my RT, and never broke in 88K on my RS.
