As a frequent all-night rider I read Hough's article with interest: I'm pretty sure it is one of the most dangerous times I ride and anything that can mitigate that is welcome. I thought it was a great article, but had one question: Coffee? Conventional LD wisdom cautions against it (see Iron Butt widsom stuff, Question 3). Personal experience tells me I make inaccurate decisions about myself when coffee is involved. And even the ON points out in another article in this issue that it will dehydrate you.

I stop for decaf in those early morning hours, not for hydration, obviously not for caffeine, but rather because even with electrics riding all night makes me cold, and the hot decaf warms me up from the inside. I'll stop as much as once an hour if I have to, I think I've finally learned that you really do have to take time to make time. If it gets worse than that, it's time for the 20-30 min nap.

I try to start rested, stay rested, and pay attention to how I feel. If "one little jolt" will get me thru to sunrise and a big ol' greasy breakfast (those two things always make me feel better) then I will press on, otherwise it's nappy-time. If 20 minutes doesn't do it, I will sack out until morning, beats waking up in mid-air somewhere.

also beats doing pushups and jumping-jacks in the parking lot of a truckstop:
