tires for 1100rt

I'm getting to the point where new tires arent too far off. What kind of tires have been used and what kind of mileage is usual. Here in the land of enchantment it's about 50 or more miles to the twisties so wear is a consideration!!

My rt is getting a little thin or tread and I will probably have to
get at least a rear tire some where on the trip.

I have ran everything from bridgestones to dunlap, to metezlers
and they all are about 5.5k - 6.0 k tires.

It's the nature of the beast.

FWIW I've tried Dunlop, Bridgestone and Metzler.
While the wear isn't _great_, I've had the best out of the MEZ 4.; usually arounk 10K rear and 11K for front. I weigh in at 240 so consider that in your mileage calc.

I like Metzlers' handling so I'll likely stick with them (pun intended); however, my eye does wander back over to the other brands,

There's just no way you're going to get 20K miles out of any of these tires....

One of my main complaints with the R1100RT is the 18" rim on the rear tire. The new R1150RT uses a 17" rim providing more options. On my RT over the past 60,000 miles, I have tried almost all the tires available and average between 6-10k. Many factors contribute to tire wear, but I personally believe road surface is the biggest factor. While living in Washington, D.C., I averaged 10-12k on rears using MEZ4s. In Kansas where they chip and seal most roads, I only average 6k.

My solution was to purchase a K1200RS 5"X17" rim for my R1100RT. It bolts on without any modification, however requires 4 x 55mm wheel bolts. The stock 60mm bolts are too long. This provides more tire options like using M880 tires. With an M880 rear, you should be able to double your average mileage.

A new rim costs about $550. However, an option for K1200RS owners with older bikes is the wider 5.5" X17". So, dealer and private owners have these rims available for about 1/2 price if you look around. I paid $250 for a used rim from my dealer.

I've got a D220 set on our RS with an 18" wheel. After nearly 3K highway miles over the last 5 days, it's hanging right in there. It's starting to get square, that's for sure, but I expected as much. There's plenty of tread left, but I'd bet it'll be fairly toasted by the time I get home next week.

How does the 220 compare with the 205 which it was supposed to replace? I understand that some folks prefer the old 205.

Have over 4900 mi on 205's that were on bike when I bought new in April. The rear has squared off some and the front has very little cupping, more like the edges of the tread pattern have some small fluting. Plenty of tread left. Ride semi aggressivly and 50% of time I carry my SO. Just came back from MOA rally and rode through rain every day and the bike did not slip, slide, or cause me any excitement, even of the infamous RR crossing on Rt 60. Sticks up to and probably beyond my pucker limit. Was up in the air about what to replace them with, when the time comes. Hope I can find another set of 205s. Like a lot of things in life, just about time you find what you like, it is no longer available,be it women, whiskey, or a good smoke.
