Well after resurrecting a thread from last year's rally, I decided it is time to start/host the Forum Frenzy for 2005. So the appointed time is Thursday 7PM at the Beer Tent. :clap
All are welcome! :thumb Assuming KBasa remembers the sign, we will meet at the sign in the Beer Area. If not, look for me. :brad
Any questions?

Probably, for this reason....
I once overheard someone refer in dissatisfaction about their supervisor at work " putting on their pants on one leg at a time just like everyone else".
Since then, in an effort of self improvement and to rise above the crowd, I've been practicing putting my pants on both legs simultaneously. This effort requires a tremendous vertical hop up, which demands a taller tent, or I keep hitting my head.
I can get into up to knees now...so I got THAT go'n for me.

She would like to get in an ERC class, (shes taking the basic MSF class this weekend) so I suppose that it probably depends what is open there. If it works out she'd probably go for that.

IIRC for the ERC class they suggest waiting a year from the Basic Class. But she should show up early anyway to get a good camping spot and to help with the beer consumption.

Well I was going to meet everyone last night..
and to start do ya know the difference between a fairy tale and a war story??
One starts "once upon a time..." and the other starts "you ain't going to belive this 'crap'...."
Well you ain't going to believe THIS. Riding to Ohio, I decide to leave the turnpike and head North up I-99/220 and stop in a and see from friends in Oil City, PA.. BAD choice..
Got caught in a rainstorm, and thought it will pass in 5 minutes, feels pretty good didn't stop to put on rain gear.. the rain continued to get harder, cars were pulling off because they couldn't see, and I was squinting ahead to find an overpass.. Well, I found out my boots are waterproof from the INSIDE.. I stopped tool off my boots, tipped them upside down and about 4 oz of water drained from each.. I sat on the rock wall, Squeezed out my socks, and my t-shirt. sat them all on the rock wall to air out, then returned to the bike to get my rainsuit.. got it out, got the bottom half on, turned to get my t-shirt, and me and my clothes were now seperated by a gurgling brook (more like a class II rapids) SO now I have to wade the creek to get my clothes back..
Anyways, I'm soaked, I have my rainsuit on sans socks, and am ready to head back out.. I give myself a deadline.. 12:30 (a little less then 1/2 hour) the rain lets up or not, I'm heading out!! 12:30 comes.. and about 12:45 I start back upon my journey...
IAMBOB
07-22-2005, 11:43 AM
I THINK this was SOuth of ALtoona.. could have been North. but definitely on I-99 (I think) Anyways, this little rain cloud I was driving through lasted from S0uth of Altoona up to Clearfiled on I-80(construction wasn't too bad, or at least not the worst of my problems), my five minute rain storm actually lasted more like an hour and a half.
So hear I am, hot, wet, and sticky, and decide to stop in Brookville to undress, and dry off little bit..
OH wait, I forgot the FIRST part of the trip.. I leave at 8AM figuring 5.5 hours to Oil City.. 1:30 PM.. I start getting stuck in traffic on the beltway, not ONCE but twice!! I averaged just over 30 MPH almost the first two hours.
But to continue (We are already past 1:30 at this point) I take the exit for Brookville PA and head to a SHeetz... I pull in and start to "undress" in the parking lot when I notice the local Gendarme (poh Leece) pulling into the parking lot behind me.. he gets out of his car and asks.. "Do you know why I'm stopping you?" to which I replied, "I'm already stopped" (i'm half undressed at this point) so I have no idea what you are talking about." Well he apparently doesn't appreciatte my wet humor and continues to write a 52 in a 35 ticket.. on ao FOUR lane highway, the speed limit was 35!!! $$$$$
OK, so here I am, wet, getting a ticket, bitching about my luck.. THinking it can't get any worse then THIS!! WRONG~~~
Well, I get everything off.. drape everthing over the bike to dry.. and go in the store while he's busy writing out my pledge to the local judge, and keep our cops emplyed fund raiser.. SO after a short while, he comes back to me with the ticket, I fold it put it in my wallet and start getting redressed, in my still wet, but somewhat refreshing clothes..
And I hit the road (NOT one of my designated gas stops, so no gas). I continue up the backroads (Rte 322) to get to Oil City and Franklin and get to my next gas stop. I pull in to the Sheetz in Cranberry (the northen Cranberry, not the one by Pittsburgh) it's now 4:00, I am currently 2.5 hours behind and yet it gets better, I unlock my gas tank, and reach in my pocket to get my credit card.. NO WALLET!! SO here I am with 2 lines on my gas guage, no wallet, no cash.. and I know where I left it.. on the ground when I was putting my boots back on in the SHeetz parking lot, in Brookville!! I call, no luck... I backtrack the 40 miles to see for myself.. no luck.. and of course NOW my yellow light has been on for awhile. And talk about a sad face.. wet, behind schedule.. BUT optimistic, "When I find my wallet, I'll continue straight to Lima, friends will haev to understand" NO luck. Call girlfriend, to wire me money.. closest place to get to is 40 miles away.. NOT likely to make it.. AND I don't have any ID at all..
WELL, all this to tell you the important part of the story. I received in the mail maybe a WEEK before all this the BMW Anonymous book, and I immediatly put it in a zip-Loc bag in one of my side cases.. THANK GOD.. of course it took me almost TWO hours to remember that I had it, but I DID.. I called Two numbers, got an answering machine at the first, and thought "WHODAHELL am I kidding, this close by they are ALL at the Rally".
CONT...
IAMBOB
07-22-2005, 12:01 PM
7 PM WEll, the second person answers.. and he's a godsend.. I tell him my predicament.. ON the way to the Rally, almost 400 miles into the trip, 400 miles away from home, and NO way to get any money to get back home. Without Hesitation, he replies, "I'm over an hour away, but I'll get there as soon as I can. What can I do to help." Without beating around the bush, I tell him, "I just need gas money, $20 to get me home." And he replies that I need more then gas to get home, he'll bring a little more then that..
I hang up, he's on his way... and the FIRST person I called shows up.. He was out on the scaffold working on his house, and heard the call but couldn''t get to the phone, he ran down to Sheetz to see what he could do. Told him the other person was on the way, and I didn't want to leave and have my rescuer show up to an empty parking lot, and think it was a prank.. after a few kind words of encouragement, my he left to continue his day, meetings for the rest of the afternnon for him.. followed in about 15 seconds by a call from my 'on the way' rescuer, saying this is my cell phone number if someone shows up, call me so I don't have to drive all the way there for nothing.. (I didn't have the heart to tell him).. so I said I would, and hung up.
They show up, him and his wife, with enough money for the trip home, and to get something to eat and drink along the way.. GOD bless him..
To finish the story, I left Brookville PA, headed for Dameron MD.. The furthest away from Brookville I could get and still be in MD.. at 8:30.. I made it all the way to Hagerstown before the 'Z' Monster, running for all he was worth, caught up to me.. Found a Rest Area in between H-Town and Frederick, pulled in and slept for 1,5 - 2 hours on a concrete picninc table.. I sleptt on the bench and my arms kept slipping off and waking me up, so I velcroed my (velcro closures) two gloves together, and I woke up around 1:30 AM when the Velcro gave in, and my hand slid off my chest. OFF to the races.. at speeds with-in the posted limit of course.. and I FINALLY pulled into my driveway a little past 4AM.. so I went from 8AM yesterday, to 4 AM today, put 800 miles on my little RS, and I didn't get anywhere.
IAMBOB
07-22-2005, 12:07 PM
I called my brother (a K1200LT owner out of Boise) to tell them all was OK.. OH I forgot about that part.. He calls at 11:30 PM to see how much fun I was having at the Rally, pissed that I could go and he couldn't. and I get to tell them this whole story.. He was pretty amused at the justice, though he DID try to hide it!
ANYWAYS. he tells me I should have continued through, then asked for help to get home after getting to the Rally (I think I was within 150 miles of Lima).. he was sure everyone would have enjoyed the story, and taken up a fund, "Quarter in the bucket to get Bob home" and if I had already met most of you, I would have, but thought that kind of strange to do the first time meeting a group of people. So anyways, I understnad next year is VT!?? Count me in! I'm going to do the short bus, tie my wallet around my neck solution next year..
Lessons Learned.. Always carry an emergency credit card / cash either on your bike, or as I was told in the past, carry one credit card in your sock.
NEVER leave home without the BMW MOA anonymous book.. What a life saver it turned out to be.. AND thank god for MOA to even think of publishing it in the first place..
Now if you excuse me I have a check to write and get in the mail Post-Haste!!

someone needs to find a way to give itsbob an award at the rally (in his absence of course) for these events!
hmmmm, there's a theme there - who can get across the country the fastest on a motorcycle without any cash, and with no wallet!
itsbob - thanks for sharing. so i guess your wallet is long gone? im sorry to hear that, i hope it all works out for you. i left mine at a gas station once, and i was amazed at the clarity of the memory of leaving it, yet i still left it! i could SEE it in my mind sitting on top of the gas pump! fortunately the clerk had it, and did not force me to produce identification to claim it. ;)
it's easy to say when i'm not in your shoes, but i think i'd have used the money to get TO the rally, then told the story. people there would have pitched in more cash to get you home. you'd likely be the first person to ever attend the rally and turn a profit! :D

Bob,
As an older brother, I tried to forewarn him of the pitfalls of that first long ride, but alas, as we have all found out as newbies, there just isnt enough time to read the Iron Butt Associations recommendations when you are attempting to come up with a way to bungee cord the wet bar to the back seat the night before the big ride! All I can say is, he will NEVER make THAT particular mistake again. Most people feel fortunate if they have one significant event a season. I am impressed that you pretty much covered a lot of them all in one ride.
The pluses:
Bike performed flawlessly.
Got to participate in a wet tshirt contest. It was only you, but you take what you can get when on the road.
Can now accurately identify the pain associated with a partiuclar size rain drop at a given speed.
You know how much tequila your boot will hold.
Over 800 mile day. Self perceived limits can be pushed.
Concrete picnic tables can actually be pretty comfortable at 1 am.
You have experienced the thrill of a cold wet tshirt on a warm sunny day.
No socks were left behind.
Met two very nice BMW riders, some of the best in the world.
16 hours saddle time.
No blood, stitches or visible bruises.
Minuses:
You now know a Pennsylvania state trooper personally.
The ticket that you need to use to pay the fine is in your wallet!
You lost HER credit card too.
Not sure how much trade in one can get on an RS when upgrading to an LT.
Riding is all about the experiences, the people you meet and how you respond to the challenges. I was as dissappointed as you were that you didnt make it to Ohio. You would have met some of the most awesome people on two wheels. All I can say....I will ride with you anytime little brother! The dues have been paid in full!

So what I think Bob is saying is that he'd like to have a "get to know my forum friends" party when the rally is over. :clap Say Bob, yah got any of them covenants on your property that might hinder the setting up of like 30 tents?
Gail
Actually talked to the Girl friend today, actually read her your post as I was reading it.. and she said.. "Tell them to come on down." Al I could say is as least I know I would make it to this one.
Here's the deal, we have the room for all the tents in the world, we have a two acre lot of mowed and flat land, a fire pit (kinda) and would enjoy having anyone and everyone over for some week-end this summer. I would LOVE to see 20 - 50 Beemers in my yard, and am sure it would get the neighbors atttention.
Now, where I am located. I will let you know where we are, and see if I get enough response to actually do this. For those familiar with MD, I am 6 miles North of Point Lookout in a little town called Dameron, about 1.5 miles East of Rte 235. More accurate directions can be given at any time, and lat long for the GPS, I don't have one, but can probably find an aero-chart and get ya REAL close, at least close enough to hear the noise! A lot of NICE places to ride to from here, so to use this as a jump off/ meeting point, go for a ride and come back for sleep and food, I'm all for that. :drink
Bottom line is YES, all are welcome, and would love to open my home to meet all of you.
As far as my Brother! A K bike?? NO way.. I'm an OilHead BABY!! Would HAVE to be a R1200RT.. the guy that came and saved my butt (Phil) looked at my bike and said, an RS? My SON has one of those!!

And for those NOT familiar with MD, we are 70 miles, or about 1.5 hours South (on the map directly South) of Washington DC, and about 92 miles SouthSouthWest of Baltimore, and 1.5 hours East of Richmond.
Gail.. you going to come down from NH?? After all YOU suggested the idea. (AM from NH myself, Derry and Manchester, but lifes little twists got me to Southern MD!)

Hey Bob,
How far is that from Huntingtown? My brother lives over there (and I'm not too far from Oil City)
I feel your pain coming up through western PA......

Let's see, Huntingdown is on Rte 4, Come Soth from Huntingtown on 4, you'll cross the Solomons Bridge.. You'll KNOW when you've crossed it, it's two lanes (one in each direction) NO break down lanes, and over 150 feet up, the bridge is about 30 miles South of Huntingtown.. Cross the bridge, and you'll come to your first set of lights, that's 235, take a left onto 235S, pass Patuxent River Navy Base's three gates (about 10 miles after the turn) and continue South about 15 more miles, and you are THERE!!
GAIL.. Actually September sounds like a good time, and I have started a new thread, lets see what everyone else says about the date in Sept!!

Thinking of camping and a ride on the 16/17 & 18th of September.
Check link above for a "Lighthouse Challenge Ride" 8 lighthouses and one Light Ship (inner Harbor Baltimore) in 10 hours.. We start at Point Lookout, so the first four are done within an hour or two.. then we have to hightail it NWest, Then to Baltimore, then cut across the baybridge to the Eastern Shore.
Do an ice cream/ dinner ride on Friday night to Stoney's on the Solomons Island boardwalk. Camp Friday night, lighthouse ride on Saturday ($22 per person to get into the lighthouses), camp again Saturday night.. then breakfast and ride home on Sunday..
Check the link above, it will take you to two PDF files with maps and GPS coordinates of all nine stops.. and TRINKETS.. we get TRINKETS!!
