Hi,
I used to own an R80 with a cafe fairing. But I don't know if BMW actually every sold an official "R80S" or if this was more or less just an R80 with a sport package installed at the time of sale or later.
Also, mine did not have the extra gauges (clock, and voltmeter) but I've seen some of them that did so perhaps there were different levels?
Does anyone know?
Cheers!

Hello; I believe the "S" fairing was an option offered in that model year for all models. If it was an "S" it would say "S" in the serial munber.

I ride a 1987 R80S model, however it started life as a RT, then in 1999 the RT fairing fell off and when it went back together with new fork tubes, S bars, parabellum sport fairing, bar end mirrors and such...

I bought a brand new R80 in 1985 and had the dealer set it up with an S fairing and bars, and the guages. So far as I knew at the time, BMW wasn't offering an S model, but that's what I wanted. By having the dealer set it up that way, I was able to include the cost in the financing of the bike purchase.

It sounds like what I'm hearing is the 85-86 R80S does not really exist but is in fact an R80 with a few options added.
This clears things up for me as all the bikes I've seen like this that I've checked the vin had no special designation and wondered if there was some elusive mode.
Thanks!
