I'm nearly finished stripping black paint from cylinder heads and barrels. Take my advice if you ever need to do this - find a good local blasting facility and skip the "do it yourself" with automotive paint stripper. That baked on paint does not come off without a real battle and getting a Scotch Brite pad in between the fins can be a real challenge!
So, to my questions:
The shop manual and online part fische show no gasket between the barrel and engine block - only the cylinder and upper stud O-rings. Is this correct?
As I remember, the carbon desposits on the inside (at the top) of the cylinder are to be left intact. What about the deposits on the top edge of cylinder, the rim that protrudes ~1 mm above the barrel? This area is immediately next to the metal ring in the head gasket? Should I clean this area before reinstalling the gasket and head?
Any recommendations that would assist this mechanically-challenged amateur will be most appreciated.
