Back in Februaury I installed GS intake tubes on my '00 R1100RT and posted my glowing impressions - roarty, growling torque meister, blah, blah, blah. :D

Being the sort who can never leave well enough alone I reinstalled the stock tubes yesterday (4,300 miles later). You know what? I think I like the stockers better (for now anyway).

What I found is that the GS tubes:
~ have a roarty intake honk
~ do seem to improve torgue in the 2500-3800 range (this is all seat of the pants, mind you)
~ definitely - on my bike with a moderately tuned Techlusion R259 & Denso IK22 plugs - create a flat spot at about 3800 - 4000 rpm, from which it emerges during acceleration with a nice power hit.

Now you ask, "So, what's the big deal?"

~ the intake honk got old - in the end I prefer quieter
~ the power curve is more linear with the stock tubes - makes for smoother roll-ons
~ and finally - this one is more subtle - the engine seems to rev more willingly, & cleaner, with the stockers. I find myself spending more time in the 5000rpm neighborhood instead of the 3500 one. Strictly a matter of personal preference, but at 5000 there is definitely more immediately available power should you find a need to hustle a bit.

I know that the flat spot with the GS tubes is counter to the available dyno results. My theory is that the Techlusion corrected the torgue dip & when then combined with the more restrictive GS tubes actually results in an overly rich condition during hard acceleration.

Comments? Thoughts? :doh 's?

Well Steve, this is certainly a fascinating thread. I'll help you keep it from withering on the vine and slipping into oblivion.

Interesting post Steve. I have been wanting to try the GS tubes for a while, it seems to be a popular modification over on the RS forum. Most folks really like the improvement it brings. I wonder if the techlusion did change what putting them on does for a stock bike.

RobL suggested the GS intake tubes to most of us RS folks back in the day, because the RS had tall final drive gearing and didn't have great midrange roll-on like the RT. I owned both an RS and an RT at the time, and thought I would try 'em.

I bought a set and installed them on the RS. And hated the effect.....they killed the top-end hook that I liked on the RS engine and also sounded "boomy." I didn't even bother trying them on my RT, and sold them the next week.

I had contemplated installing GS tubes at one point on my RT, but never got around to it. Kinda glad that I didn't.......... :D

Gee guys, you make me feel like I actually started an intelligent, provocative thread. (It might be dangerous to encourage me)

Beers all around if you make it to Lima. And for my secret admirer; two beers!

Ya'll look for me if you make it to the beer tent - I'm easy to recognize - I'll be the guy who looks like an idiot.

Oh yeah, I'll also be riding a BMW. :p
