Got my first BMW last week ('82 R100/RS). Do any of you have any suggestions as to the best tech/repair books/manuals to pick up for intense rebuilding of this and other older airheads; I'm also looking at 1 or 2 other 'projects'. Were and how do I get it?

Rocket,
I also am quite new to the boxer world, although I've owned a '87 K75C since new. I recently purchased a '82 R65LS that I'm currently restoring. I purchased a Clymer manual online and a BMW factory shop manual through MotoBins in England. For my money the Clymer manual is the way to go. Great pictures and easy to understand verbiage. Although it covers many models and years, I have yet to find anything missing. The Clymers is also a whole lot cheaper. Many .coms carry the Clymers.

My 2 cents.

I would add a Haynes manaual to the Clymer. They still come out cheaper than the factory manual, especially if you get them used. The advice I got was that the 2 manuals complement each other because Haynes covers more of how to do stuff without the factory tools while Clymer has more detail. A parts book is also useful because it shows a lot of detail of how things go together, what goes where and what can be added or exchanged. Unfortunately the only paper parts books are printouts of the circa 1982 microfiche so they are a little dated, OTOH you can get the current ones on CD.

Just go to www.realoem.com and type in your 7 digit vin number and you have the parts fiche with correct part numbers. They aren't in the retail business yet but you can get the part numbers for ordering from someone else. I have found that www.chicagobmwmotorcycles.com seem to have the cheapest prices.

All of the parts lists and service manuals for Airheads, Oilheads and K-bikes are available on CD just like the dealers use so you can get the latest part numbers, just not on paper.

That disc is called ETK and copies float freely about. Just ask and somebody can make a copy for you.

I agree, get both Clymer and Haynes manuals. They both have their strenghs and weakness. Motorrad Electric also has a good book they sell on the BMW chargeing system and get the manual from Bing carburaters on the scematics of their carbs, how to rebuild and adjust them. Good luck.
