I am new to the BMW world and like a knucklehead decided not to purchase the service manual (big mistake) I finally have a day off and would like to change the oil in my 2004 R 1150 RT.
1) Is the aluminum hex head bolt in the center of the oil pan the drain plug?
2) What should I torque the filter and drain plug to?
3) The oil filter came with a bag of washers. Are these for the drain plug?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

1) Yes!

2) I never torque the drain plug or the oil filter. Hand tighten (snug) only!!

3) No idea......... :dunno

NOTE: Although I no longer use BMW OEM oil filters, I have purchased one or two in the past. The ones I bought, never came with a bag of anything.

Regarding 3), it sounds like you were given a K bike oil change kit. I don't believe the R11XX drain plug washer is included (if there's a rubber o-ring in there you definitely have the K kit) in that kit, so you may need to get that part from the dealer.

you should have one crush washer for the plug. just tighten it. also, put some oil in the filter before installing (you will then add that much less thru the filler). make sure the engine (and therefore oil) is warm before changing it.

You were given an oil drain "kit" which includes crush washers for the engine oil drain plug, transmission plug, and final drive plug. Only one will fit the engine oil drain, a couple will be too small, a couple will be too big. Use the one that most closely resemble the one that you just took off.

save the other washers for the tranny and rear end oil change. BTW....the fluid change on those are no harder, and possibly easier, than the engine oil change.

Speaking of RT tranny oil changes, anyone using a 90w/140 weight oil?

I'm currently using MOBIL 1 75w/90 and have been thinking about trying the MOBIL 1 90w/140.

Weird thing is......I've been paying about $6.00 or so per qt. for the 75w/90. The 90w/140 is almost $17.00 per qt. :dunno

None of the store help can explain why the big diff. in cost.

Thanks for the info. We are heading to WillVille Friday morning and I wanted to change the oil before we hit the road. Hope everyone has a good ride this weekend.

i just switched to this in the S, its the best 30 dollar (well 20 dollar or so, since you only use a quater of the second bottle) upgrade i've ever made. much smoother shifting vs what i'm assuming was the 6 yr old factory non-synthetic oil. no more missed shifts at all

Good to know! The next time my RT is due for a tranny / final drive lube change, I'll try the 90w/140 in the tranny. Think I'll stay with the 75w/90 in the final drive though. :thumb

i switched to synthetic at 3k miles in tranny and rear end. used BMW brand and have noticed a difference. not drastic but a difference. as i get more miles (up to 8k now) the moto is noticeably smoother in every facet.

I switched to full-synth. (Mobil 1) in the tranny / final drive at 1200 miles.

Switched to full-synth. (Mobil 1) in the engine at 3K miles. :thumb

gonna wait on syn for the engine til about 15k or so miles. my oil consumption is way down now, but i'll use dino for a couple more changes at least. it's drinking maybe a quart every 2k miles now, probably a tad less than that. for the first 5-6k miles it was thirsty. :dunno

I've heard of BMW's using up to or a little more than 1 qt. of oil between oil changes. Matter-of-fact, I even discussed this "issue" with the BMW dealer before I bought my 2003 RT.

I don't know if it's related or not, but since using MOBIL 1 15w/50 oil in it since the 3K mark, it doesn't use enough oil between oil changes, to be noticeable.

After an oil change (and establishing the correct level), I don't even bother to check the oil level again, until it's time for the next oil change (which is now every 5K). :thumb

dano,

can't wait for that. think i became obsessed with wearing it in perfectly, if that is possible. got a deal on a case of bmw dino oil and am using it up. you're not the only one reporting zippo usage after switching to syn and i'm looking forward to that. i've been changing at 3k miles. may take this one a bit longer. if you think about it, by adding oil to replace what's consumed there's alway fresh dino.

wow, you're lucky, i'd be using 1 qt of oil between oil changes, if i changed my oil every 1000 miles. thats right, 3 qts of oil between every oil change, which i suppose kinda means i don't need to change my oil right??? just quickly put on a new filter and top it off

but yeah, this oil consumption stuff better chill out soon, i hate having to add oil every 3-400 miles..............

Where in the world are you folks finding the Mobile 90-140 gear lube. I have checked at every local auto parts store and can't find it. In fact, I'm being told that they can't even order it.

I believe the Mobil I synthetic is 75W90. There is a Valvoline 80W140 synthetic blend which is a bit thick on cold mornings. BMW has a 75W140, and it's good stuff which I have used. Amsoil now has a new severe service synthetic 75W140 which works very well in my R1150RT tranny. Disclosure: I sell Amsoil.

Actually......I meant to say, some use up to or more than 1 qt. of oil per 1000 miles.

When I was first told this.....I was shocked......... :brow
