I'm getting ready to move (tomorrow) to Berkeley for the summer to work on a research project with some folks at the university. Since my life as a wild and crazy grad student just isn't wild and crazy enough, I decided that my life would me much more interesting if I would only take to california what I could pack on my motorcycle.

As I was prepping the K75 yesterday and getting it ready for the trip (new tires, filters, fluids, etc) I took off the rear end to grease the splines and I came face to face with the dreadded SPLINE FAILURE! There was no way that bike was going to take me to california!
With just two days until my departure I was ready to sh*t a brick! I just kept trying to remind myself how lucky I was that I had decided to check the splines BEFORE I left and I wouldn't be stranded on the side of the road in Middle of Nowhere, AZ.
I called my dad (he's a great guy to go to for advice) and he could sense the desperation in my voice. So he suggested that I drive my car *gasp!* or buy a plane ticket. But as a fellow BMW rider he knew how I had my heart set on riding out to CA and touring the countryside.
So he did a very generous thing and offered HIS K75 for me to ride! I thought that was a great idea but I would have to swtich over my windshield, seat, top case, and satelite raido to his bike. But while I was thinking of this it occured to me that I really didn't need to take his bike, but his drive shaft and rear end instead! I cant believe it, but my dad agreed to let me use his K75 as a parts bike and he even offered to pick me up and drive me out to their house (75 miles each way) so I could get the parts! :clap

Once I returned home with my "salvaged" K75 parts it was only a half hour later that I had the rear end back together and I was ready to load the bike!

Am I a lucky kid or what? :D

And PS I send the rear drive to Bruno's for rebuilding and I'm having it sent to my dad so that way he can put it on his bike. I dont want him to go an entire summer with a motorcycle he cant ride!

There are great roads in the Berkley hills along the Skyline. You'll love it there.

I borrowed a bike (albiet a 10 speed bicycle) from my dad once too. The key word is once. I brought home a pile of parts, as I road it headlong at 20-25 MPH into the back of a parked pick-up truck. The only parts salvagable were the rear wheel and seat. Everything else was ripped to shreads!!

Now about Berkeley!!

The bay area is one of the truly beautiful and culturally cool places on earth to live (or just visit)... Don't get too used to it, unless you have access to some serious BLING! Real estate is a little pricy (about $600 - $1000 per square foot)...

Have fun with the ride and the research!

I'm starting to sense the need for a Bay Area gathering of some variety, no?

Oh yes I would be very excited about getting together with some other riders in the bay area!
